Default 66 no dash ss sights

What is going price for a 4 " as above for a shooter grade. Bore and internals are fine. Beat up box with everything. Lots of the micro scratches that ss gets. Nothing that is actual damage and they all would polish out. Original grips with some dings.
Shop is asking 599, plus tax and will not drop a penny.
Seems high to me but I am trying to find a 4" 66 no dash, really don't care about which sights it has, and I just am not finding one.
Would settle for a blue 4" 19-3 but same thing.
I don't want a safe quen, I want a shooter at a good price.
Thanks for the info, if you got a 19 or 66 at a better price shoot me a pic

I'd think that's about right maybe $50 high. FWIW I bought a 2.5" 66-1 that had some minor pits and scratches that polished out nicely for what I thought was a steal at $400. It had Pach's on it and no box though.

That's decent price for a 66 no dash with stainless sights. Watch Gunbroker, 66s keep going up and the 4" ones with stainless sights faster than any of them. IMHO they are the most desirable of the whole 66 series with the 4" barrel.

Be warned if your looking for a shooter the stainless sights are pretty lousy especially in low light or brilliant sun.

Default Stainless Front and Rear

When you say stainless, you mean front AND rear? Or just front? The early ones had both. I guess S&W was enamored with the idea of ss and didn't stop to think whether it worked or not.

It is front and rear both, my dad had one as a duty gun with both front and rear ss that my sister ended up with.
I put many thousands of wad cutters through it over the years growing up. He put paint on the back and front sites. If I recall it was hobby paint because it predated sight paint, or at least that we saw.
They bought their own duty weapons and after a few years he bought another with the black rear sight and a red insert front. That was his baby and he gave it to me. For some reason I am almost sure it was a no dash but it could have been a -1.
Unfortunately my ex wife sold it to a pawn shop in Indiana along with almost every other gun he left me about 7 years ago while I was out of the country for work.
I'm just trying to find a replacement

I think it's a good deal. If you have trouble seeing the rear sight, you can swap the blade for a black one. I've always liked the looks of the stainless sights. Go for it!

I paid $1150.00 for this unfired pair last year with nice 'period' leather. I don't know how the actual value would breakdown percentage-wise between the two but I thought I did pretty well. I was 'forced' to buy the pair - I didn't have a choice if I wanted one or the other but I wanted both.

As I said, I have shot ss sights and I'd didn't prefer them but at this point I'm not finding many decent k frame options. Last one I looked at was at a pawn shop and someone had turned it into a round butt, poorl, and tried to stiple the back strap. All hidden by wrap around grips that I'm glad I took off before buying.

You don't need to change the whole sight, just the blade.

GrayGhost99 buy that gun it's obvious ya want it it is like the one you had that your ex stole/ sold ( glad she's ya ex to do ya like that) .Buy that gun walk away grinning stop at Walmart and buy your favorite color model paint and an artist brush and go to town at the range .I have shot more rounds thru guns with home painted sights than anything else so don't doubt me on this buy that gun. Let us know with pics of painted sights and maybe a range report sometimes we get caught up on 50 bucks one way or tne other and miss good guns because of that .You aren't looking an investment you want it just be ause you want it so go ahead man " buy that gun!!! This is a no-brainer.
1. Without exactly saying so, you're looking for a model 66.
2. It's very easy and not much time to correct surface scratches on a stainless firearm and put to stocks back in better condition.
3. More than likely you're going to look a long time and require some luck to find a significantly less expensive example.

Not a bad price................... ask yourself ..... when did I last see one locally for sale.

I'd have to answer.............. "I can't remember!" I got mine at least 15 years ago.

painting front sights: been doing it for decades...I use Tester model paint.... always do a base coat of white...... I use florescent red!

If you really want one, you need to buy it!
There are plenty of other folks, like me, who like these.
I wouldn’t expect it to be there very long!

For a revolver you really want, and you certainly have reason to want this one, go ahead and get it.

Let us know how much you like it, once you have it!

Yes. My 66 no dash has a SS rear site with a black blade. Front SS sight ramp has a orange insert.

I was planning on doing this on mine and was strongly advised against it due to the difficulty of the blade screw removal and the chance for damage but someone who really knows please jump in!

I got mine barely used from a LGS. It came with the black sight blade, target trigger and hammer. Lightest and smoothest double action trigger pull of any revolver I've shot. And I've had and shot many.

Buy it!

It isn't a steal, but it ain't outrageous, either.
You can see what you are getting.
It is there, in hand, no shipping or waiting.
You can check the timing, forcing cone, etc.
You don't have to depend on a picture or description.
The SS sights aren't a big deal. I have owned
66s and 67s with SS sights, and they are easy to
"de-glare."

Buy it!

You can spend a fortune trying to find another one, and when you do, it will be a lot more than $600!

Default 66 No dash

Seems like not a bad deal, and it's what you want. I recently bought a no dash 66 at my LGS for $525 but I'm in California so stuff is usually more expensive. I think it's early but has a SS front and blue rear sight assy. and rubber grips.

$599 is a real good deal.

Try and find a pinned and recessed 66 for that price anywhere else, and it has original grips and the box. They may not be perfect, but the package is worth more than $600.00.

The gun can be cleaned up and scratches can be polished out with some Flitz or Mothers. The grips can be restored/repaired.

I have seen two 4" model 66's in all of my years looking for one.

One was a 66-2 that was marked $750 and the guy would not come down a dime on it. Not a dime. And the other one was a 66-1 that was a police gun, it was etched with the agency name on the Frame (poorly) and there were scratches galore on it that would never Polish out. They had it marked $650 and would not go down on it at all. I like Patina, this one was really rode hard. I would have gone $550 on it and had a great shooter, but he wouldn't move on the price.

These early revolvers are sought after by collectors I think, more than shooters. If you get it, don't start changing parts on it, just use the paint as suggested. These guns are getting very hard to come by. I think most were made in 1974 and are over 40 years old. I have one, but I don't shoot it. I have other 357's to shoot. Mine is in the box and I paid more than $600 for it a couple years ago. There are lots of M66's for sale, but very few have the stainless sights. You are paying a collectors premium for the gun. I like the "matching" touch S&W tried to do with the stainless sights on these guns. By making the gun more uniform, it adds an extra touch of class in my opinion.

Colt kind of did this. Blued guns got blued triggers and hammers, nickel guns got nickel triggers and hammers. I know S&W was enamored with CCH triggers and hammers and even patented it, but it was still matching and I liked it. Pride in manufacture. Colt also matched the sights. I'm not too sure about pre-war2 guns, but post-war2 guns like the Python got either blue or nickel front and rear sights to match the finish. This stopped after 1970. They even used nickel or blue screws and bushings in their grip hardware to match the finish. Ratchets were also nickel, I liked that.

All little touches that make a gun more time and labor intensive, therefore making it a step above others. I believe this is why these stainless sighted S&Ws bring premiums and are highly sought after.

If the gun is in good condition mechanically and will clean up well, I don't think the price is too out of line for a unique example such as this. I would probably swap the sight or blade out on it for shooting, but hang on to the original sight and always keep it with the package. You will have a fine shooter and as long as you take care of it, will always hold it's value.
