Default Stock Question for a 17-3 From 1970

I am looking at a 17-3 with a serial number of K955xxx that dates to 1970 and it has Target stocks not original to the gun (serial number on the stock does match the gun). I am wondering if Model 17s in 1970
were shipping with Magna or Target stocks? Thank you

My recollection is the Model 17-3 could have originally shipped with either Target stocks or the smaller Magna stocks.

The K-22 Masterpiece, Model 17, was cataloged in 1970 as being available with Magna stocks made of American walnut. Target stocks could be ordered with the revolver as an extra cost option.

There's a serial number on the stocks? Very odd if they are from 1970 or so vintage. Is there a smooth diamond shape around the screw holes? Non-diamond target stocks should not have a serial number.

A photo of the numbers on the stock panel would help - more likely factory if stamped, and done by a previous owner if handwritten. I've seen this done by collectors to keep their stocks matched to the gun.

A letter of authenticity from the SWHF would tell you if the Target stocks were original to the gun also.
