Hwy Patrolman 28-2
Bought this 357 at a local pawnshop. Grips don't have a number on inside. I'm not sure if the Hwy Patrolman (1978) had magnas or targets? Only pics I have right now. Input & comments greatly appreciated.

Very nice, I likey!!! nice target grips also which could be original if the serial number starts with a N.The target grips were an option and not numbered to gun in that time frame. A keeper for sure!

It could have been ordered with Targets or somebody could have put them on at any time in the last 30+ years.

A nice package the way it is! Most of my Smith Revolvers wear target stocks, including my 6" 28 no dash. Bob

Check the stocks box on the end label. If it is an S it shipped with magna stocks. If an ST it shipped with Target stocks.

wetdog a question.
My 6 inch 28-2 that came with the original box is marked ST. It wears smooth targets that I think are original. Does the ST marking mean smooth targets or just target stocks? Thanks. JA

That is a really neat, clean M28!! I think you did well without knowing what you paid.

j a - The S on the label means square butt. By itself that would mean the gun came with magnas. The ST breaks down to square butt, target stocks.

To me, $600 for an HP in that condition would be extremely hard to pass up. In fact, the last time I saw a 4" great condition 28-2 for $650 I bought it. This after already owning a 4" 28-2. And because I was lacking a 6" I bought one last weekend, same great condition, for a little over $700.
Congrats!

Sunday night, (figures) a very decent four inch M-28 went for $510 on G.B. ( item 714868394)
because the photos used were of a beater Colt , had to go to Photo number 19 (past the Colt images) to see the actual S&W item. Had just bought the M-19 the day before, but been watching it creep up from $350 not surprised if someone here was in on it, catching this goofed listing deal, hope so. Anyway, was nice one but not as nice as the one on this thread I'd bid a $700 on it easy, very nice gun! Also nice when you can buy on the spot not a photo.

Great price. I have two m28 no dash, one is in 99.99% condition the other is 98% condition a tad wear on the muzzle holster wear. My m28-2 is 99.99% all 6” barrels in the dull blue. All were $695 each. I try not to pass up any n frames.
Before the flood of the Tupperware auto pistols the n frames in 357 mag or any other caliber were rare like hens teeth. Like before the internet. Locally the chances of finding one is slim to none. Now I think the older shooters are cashing in their n frames. They seem to trickle in. Not a lot just a few to raise an interest in them. There still out there.
It was a game of musical chairs for a while with the older collectors trading them in. We had to move quickly to get them. The cost has been a roller coaster ride too. Some are over $2k
What cracks me up is the prices on the colt and s&w 22cal revolvers. Some are as high as $1,700. Depending on condition. They sell too.
I think soon the prices will go higher as the demand from the younger shooters/collectors increases. There won’t be enough N frames to go around.

28-2
Great score. I picked up a 28-2 4 inch 6 months ago. It had been in a safe it's whole life and never been fired. They are great guns. I'm still smiling ear to ear.

Hmmm, I'm in the opposite thinking camp. As we old collectors die and our collections hit the market, where are the young folk shooting revolvers? If it isn't plastic, they don't want it.

That's where this came from earlier in the week. A local collector's estate. It went to a good home. It'll probably stay here until I kick the bucket.
I assume that the smooth presentation style target stocks in this "N" serial numbered 1978 (or so) 28-2 are not original.

I LIKE the looks of that 6" HP NCBeagle. I definitely see a hunt for a pair like that in my future. This after Christmas when I'll get to use the 6" HP I'll pick up from GunBroker later this week.

I would assume that too, but the only way to be sure is a $75 factory letter. My copy of the 1980 Gun Digest lists the price of the M28 at $205.50 "with target stocks", $15 more than the price with magnas. It does not specify "checkered target stocks" so who knows, maybe if the customer insisted on smooth targets, the factory shipped it that way.
