What is on your short list?
I have reached a point in my collection that I am running low on N-frames. I have a bunch of K-frames new and old big and small but only 3 N-frames. So my attention lately has been to look for a model 27 and a model 57 or 58. I lust after the beautiful checkering atop the 27's but nice ones are not cheap. Also don't own anything in 41 mag. Can't wait to find a decent one. I would assume after I collect for each caliber an engraved gun would be the next step and it's an expensive step up. Just wondering what plateau has been reached by others and where your sights are set for next purchase??

I have a list of wants, but I don't seek them out in order. I wait for a target of opportunity to present itself. Any Chiefs Special I don't already have always gets my attention. Also on the list -- in no particular order -- are a 13-1 3", 58 S-serial, 520, 45, and the ultimate: a 50 pinto.
Best of luck in your search. It's all about the hunt.

Yes I forgot about pinto's , one would be nice. I am just like two bit cowboy as I don't actively search for an exact gun. I just peruse local stores and online auctions looking for that special gun that's a good deal. Being In the right place at the right time is how I get the best bargains along with not being particular as to the model. 19's tend to peak my interest the most hence why I have so many k frames.

I'd love to get a 4" 29-2. To me it's the most aesthetically pleasing S&W and I would shoot it, a lot.

At the top of my short list is a shooter grade 58. Since I will not buy other than a LGS it might be a long wait!

3inch Model 13 or a 3914NL are all that's really on a "want" list.

Triple lock and RM. Definately on my list but not so probable due to these being rare and desirable. One day it may happen. Never say never

This is an interesting and more complex question that it appears .
For several months, I have started concentrating on finding a some "grail" (dislike this use of that word!) guns in lieu of my usual M.O. of lesser condition "rescues". The rescues will always have a dear place in my heart and ...no I'm not at the point I will not bring an orphan into the fold. However, several guns have been on my want list for years and I find myself focusing on those of late. The occupants of this roster tend to be more rare (read that EXPENSIVE!) than my run of the mill acquisitions. My local pawn shop haunts aren't likely to produce any of them.
After a multi year search, I finally got a 1st Gen Colt SAA .38-40 with a 4 3/4" bbl. that hadn't been refinished into oblivion I could actually afford without taking out a 2nd mortgage.
Some others have found their way here like a Benelli B76, Colt 1878 DA .45 from the Philippine Constabulary, Colt 1878 .44-40 DA from Atlanta PD, and most recently a S&W Model of 1926 3rd Model from Providence RI PD. etc.
Through my years of collecting, I've successfully acquired a service revolver that was carried on duty in every state and from many other eclectic agencies.
Circling back around to the original question, my "want" list is going to sound more "high end" than I ordinarily seek out.
A S&W American from the Nashville Police would rank way up there in the rare air along with a San Antonio PD Colt SAA 1st Gen .45 from 1927 when they issued them. A 4" Model 11 would be awesome too!
Realistically, a Triple Lock .44 & a Registered Magnum would be nice. A 4" K-32 or M&P and any revolver issued by the FBI would fit nicely as well.
Best,
Charles

I am looking for a pre-model 12 currently. I need it to hold a set of stocks I just bought.

A 2.5" 66 or 66-1 is at the top of the list. A 520 NYSP, a 4" S prefix 28-2, and a 25-7 or 25-9 are also high on the list.

1 that I have always wanted, is a 547. Not really sure why. Right behind that would be a 27. Then another 45ACP revolver, etc, etc. Bob

I'm at the age where my list has gotten simple as my reach has gotten more realistic. I've got the parts in hand to build a copy of an early post-War K-32 and have most of the other K-frames I've wanted. Next on my list is the Winchester sxp 12 gauge camp and field combo because I have decided to relegate my great shooting s&w 1000 to fun gun only. Next would potentially be a 638 as after a summer of daily carry either on the hip or in the pocket my 49 has shown that it's not fond of Texas humidity. Lastly 2.5-3" round butt 19 or 66 as it is my dream carry gun. My wife has already given the okay to buy one within our budget just none have come around at the right price.

My list isn't that long........
a pristine registered Magnum
a set of Nickeled Colt 4 3/4" SAA in .45 Colt
a High Standard original Victor or Trophy in mint condition
a Belgium Browning Midas Grade Superposed in 12 Ga.
That's not asking too much, is it?

Not at all!
I saw your Victor at the last show I attended. If the guy is at the next one in a couple weeks I'd be glad to get his contact info for you.

Something case hardened by Linebaugh or Hamilton Bowen.
Probably in .475 with a barrel band on the muzzle and an EK style gold bar distance front sight.

I really don't have a list, but this would be the near the top. It's one of those that I've always wanted, but never owned. And I'd shoot it a bunch!

13-3 3"
65-5 3" LS
610 3" prelock/mim
27-2 3.5"

Short list would be a 15 and a 19, pre 81ish. But I also want a spare 28-2 (a shooter), a four inch 29-2, a spare 14-3 or 4. Then I'd want a 17 so I could preserve my '48 K-22, and a 18....

My list starts to get very long if shotguns and other brand handguns are included. I have managed to acquire a 1923 colt pre-woodsman with full King super target treatment so Between that and my Weatherby mark xxll I am pretty spoiled on the 22's and don't even own a smith and wesson 22 yet. An older Browning superposed or even a nice older XT would be awsome for trap!! My list just begins to go on and on and on. I am sure most of you understand.

I actually have an appointment this coming Friday with an aging Club Member who says he has one in perfect condition so I may actually get one. We'll see what his opinion of perfect is and how much he wants. I was down at our Club meeting a few weeks ago and he heard me talking about the High Standards and asked me if I was interested. So we'll see how it works out.
Thank you for your offer, I do appreciate it - but I'd like to actually see what I am buying first hand. I have seen a few online and while in the past I've purchased many guns from GB (without actually handling them) but the world is a bit different now and caution must be taken now more than ever - hence I've not bought one online. Especially with an original High Standard as they are out of business for many years now and parts may not be readily available. The "new" HS Co. is definitely not what the old one was......

I do not have a bunch of guns, but I am thinking I will be done when I get a model 29, a model 69, and an AK-47. My wife, on the other hand, says I'm done.

Hmm my short list,,,, I been wanting a 8 3/8" barrel magnum N frame. But like potato chips you can't have just one. Plus magnums come in three different calibers again we can't have just one. I just can't own one. Then it's the 4" & 5" barrels. The short list turns into a long list. It's a never ending story. Did I say I prefer them in nickel? Gonna dig deep in my pocket I guess.

I guess the top of the list for me is a 2" Model 30 to keep my two .32 Regulation Police Models company.

Hope your Club Member pal's gun is exactly what you're looking for. It's always better to have your hands on the potential new member of the family. I get it.
Best of luck,

Trying to find
A nice model 66.
It has to be a 4" gun, preferably pinned and recessed, but definitely a pre-lock gun.
I really want of those.
I would also love to get a 5" 29 or 629 with a full underlug barrel.

I just recently got a bug that tells me I want a 3" model 60. Have seen some nice ones, but promised my wife I would not buy anything for a while. Kind of liking the ones with the milled barrel, as I am considering this a replacement for my 637 as an everyday carry, but I like the Lady Smith's sights, or lack of sights.

Funny to mention a 66. I was looking at and really admiring a 66 no dash with a 5 inch barrel. I sure could go for one of those!

Having thought about this some more, I'm looking at finishing up my recreation of an early, narrow rib K-32 with 6" barrel, swapping my 6" Model 586 ND for a similar model in 4" and then putting a 6" barrel on my Model 29-2, perhaps along with a restoration at S&W.
Along with a variety of S&W and other autos, I probably will then have what I "need" but the again, what does "need" have to do with it?

I target no particular gun when I attend a gun show but I'd probably buy a nice blue pre 27 or 27-2 with a 3 1/2" barrel if the price were right.
Saw a nice 3 1/2 pre 27 in blue with a factory lettered patridge front sight plus unrelieved targets and a well worn in nickle with beat up Cokes at a recent show but they prices asked were near to those for LNIB.
My top offer for the blue pre 27 was about 40% of the asked price. The gun is not in my safe.

I just finished my short list, so I guess I will have to think about a new list. What next.
The short list I just completed was for my BLUE 27-2's. I now have all six barrel lengths in 27-2. I have the 3-1/2, 4, 5, 6, 6-1/2 and 8-3/8 all in presentation cases with acc.
In case the suggestions comes up, I do not do NICKEL.

Shorty 45 is my short list ...
But I'd like a 10mm revolver 310 or 610 with shorter barrel. 3" would be perfect but I don't even know if they made one. A 4" would be next but I'd be tempted with any length I could find.

What is on your short list?

Can't wait to find a decent one. I would assume after I collect for each caliber an engraved gun would be the next step and it's an expensive step up. Just wondering what plateau has been reached by others and where your sights are set for next purchase??

You are spot on with the 57 and 58......a bit harder to find than a 27 and probably not as pristine as 27s but boy they sure are representative of the N frame. I just need them in nickel now.

While I am at it, I took the 13-3 3 inch barrel off my want list just the past couple weeks. I am not sure what is on the list next, but I am pretty sure it will be something else I don’t really need.

...as far as S&W...I'm on the lookout for K frame snubbies and K frames with long barrels and target sights...after never wanting 4 inch service revolvers...I now find I would like a model 13...and a model 58...
...lately though I have been filling out holes in my rifle collection...my last two purchases being a Marlin 1894 lever action in 44 Magnum...and a Weatherby Mark V bolt action in 7mm Weatherby Magnum...

Just found a rifle I have been wanting for 20 years if that counts...I am a big fan of the 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser cartridge and have an unmodified M96 Carl Gustav...
What I wanted was a commercial 6.5x55 and finally found a very nice Remington 700 mfg in 1972 in a local store with a Leupold base and rings, a Burris 3x9 scope for $500.00!!
Yeah, I bought it.......Now. I got to go to the range and zero it.
