Default Model 30-1

My 93 yr old father in law asked me to sell his almost new 30-1 revolver. It looks new, in the box, has the cleaning tool that has never been used, and the sales paperwork from 1974. It shows some signs of being fired but the finish is flawless. Any ideas as to what a gun like this is worth?

I bought its older sister (1960) four inch in nickel yesterday for $410 but no box/papers and it has some freckles. I'd say yours is in the $600 range; more if you're willing to advertise and wait a bit, and a little less if you want a quick sale. One option to sell is to list it here on the "for sale" side of the forum. Nice gun, good luck.

Nice looking revolver. Can you possibly post a couple more pics? I would suggest at least the left side and the back strap. Is there some finish issues on the barrel right in front of the frame or it that an optical illusion? Hardcase60

If he were my father-in-law I'd give him $600 for it and never let it out of my sight.

I'd agree with hipower above; doubt you'd have any trouble getting 600 from someone who appreciates S&Ws, classic snubs, or better yet, both.

As mentioned, the For Sale forum here on the site is a great way to reach potential S&W collectors particularly.

It's a great piece; good luck!

As usual, the forum members came through. I might have to do what Two-Bit cowboy and Cal44 recommend and buy it myself. He had his father's Colt OP 38 with S&W letter from Mr. Jenks and somehow managed to lose it in the move last year. Sweet shooting gun that was coming to us. We are pretty upset at the loss. Thanks to all.

I was late responding to your PM and agree that buying it would be the best option. I am a .32 fanatic and have used them to train my kids, grandkids and family members with firearm safety and gifted the guns to them upon completion!

Default Model 30-1 resolution

As recommended, I bought the gun and kept it. I must say that it is a very nice gun to shoot, and it the first revolver that my wife liked. Thank you for helping me to make the decision.

Default Update on our new 30-1

We are very happy that we took the advice of the forum members and kept the gun. It is a pleasure to shoot and is the only revolver that my wife will shoot more than 2 rounds without complaining. I was worried about the availability of 32 ammo, but our local range has plenty of it at reasonable prices.

Congratulations! You did the right thing by purchasing it yourself and keeping it in the family. Like the rest of the gun, the magna stocks look perfect, but really dried out. Get some good wood oil and let it dribble all through the checkering and the channel that outlines the checkering as well as the back. They will certainly thank you for your effort.

Default S&W Model 30-1

Thanks, I did oil the stocks and it looks great. I hadn't thought of doing that since I don't own a handgun with wooden stocks.

Small light guns are more difficult to shoot. Your 32 should be capable of putting 6 shots inside a 6" target (or less) at 30 ft. Sit down and put the gun on sandbag, it should do it.

I've told the story of my wife's Model 30 many times. She loved it.
The best .32 Long ammo I've found is the Magtech 98gr SJHP. Its accurate, a little more powerful and has an excellent reputation for penetration and expansion. This ammo turns the little .32 into a viable defense gun.
