Default New (to me) 25-2

Yesterday, I bought a nice Model 25-2 45 ACP from a dealer here in North Dakota. It's the second S&W in my modest collection, the other one being my dad's K-22 Masterpiece.

I bought my first handgun in 1972 while I was in college. My choice was between a Colt Python and a S&W Model 27. I ended up buying the Python, which is a terrific gun, but have always wanted an N frame Smith as well. Now, 45 years later, I have one! The serial number is N405190, which I think dates it to 1975-1977. Can someone here confirm that for me?

I bought some full and 1/3 moon clips from Midway, and can't wait to see how this gun shoots.

Nice find! I too finally picked up a 25-2. I've posted on and off many times in the past that a nice model 25 was at the top of my have to have revolver list . Well, it just so happens that one came along in my price range and I jumped on it like a chicken on a bug.
Here she is . I'll take some better photos when I get it next week.

John;

Welcome to the forum from Virginia! You are going to love that 25-2, I certainly do like mine so much that it gets most of the limited range time I can fit in.

Mine is a 5 digit N frame serial number and shipped in 1972 and the only thing I had trouble with was not the gun, rather the 3rd party moon clips I bought on-line......they were much too thin as measured against the factory original half-moons that I had....(0.037" vs factory at 0.041") which resulted in light strikes and FTF on several occasions. I bought some factory S&W full moon clips (S&W part number 191420000) at my LGS and have never had any problem since.

One additional "tip"......the absolute best moon loader/unloader tool out there in my opinion is BMT Model N45-6 and with this tool you are now loading 6 rounds in seconds instead of minutes.

Best of luck with that 25-2....yours is a real beauty and will give you great pleasure for years to come.

Nice score, I have it's identical twin at home. Mine dates from the same time frame, 1977 or 1978. We gave it to my father as a Christmas gift in 1978. He and I took it to the range and put 18rds through it, it hasn't been fired since. I ended up with it after my father passed away. I plan on giving it to my grandson.

With S&W 25-2 45acp revolvers you don't need moon clips to shoot 45acp ammo.You can just put the cartridges in the cylinder holes and then easily pick the fired cases out with your fingers.

Another option if you reload is to use 45 Auto Rim cases.The 45 Auto Rim ammo in boxes of 50 from dealers are much too expensive but reloading can produce a box of 50 45acp/45AR for about $5.00 with carefully selected reasonably priced components.

These days I only load 45 Auto Rim for target shooting with a 625-2 and a few rounds once a year from a pre 25.
