Default What do They want to do with this N frame?

Somebody wants to sell a revolver to a friend of mine and he send this picture of the revolver in sell.

And I donīt understand what the previous owners want to do with it. It seems that they bobbed part of the barrel and the made a thread in the end of it. And I donīt understand the thread. Why do they make it? It couldnīt be for a silencer because this kind of revolvers can not be silenced.

Dos anybody imagine what they did want to do with this revolver?

Could it have been made up for a local movie production? If'n you can get it cheap, someone can cut and crown it muy bien. Joe

May have had a compensator on it. Hard to say, people do some weird things.

If a gunsmith did the alteration I'd bet he's still chuckling to himself.

Who knows that they were thinking......it went from being a valuable gun to.....well....that.

Cut & re-crown would be the best bet.

That's a pretty coarse thread. Maybe some drug runner was using an oil filter for a suppressor.

Yes, they really do. Interesting theory.............If so, it makes one wonder how many bodies are on that gun. hardcase60

The oil filter trick probably didn't work, either. Might still be a decent shooter.

I was always a fan of Maxwell Smart, so I had to do it.

Everyone gets a kick out of it

Who knows why that Model 28 was done.

I would buy it if the price were right and then cut the barrel to 2 5/8" and round butt the frame like one of the old Austin Behlert N-frames

Could be the shadows in the picture, but those look more like decorative rings than threads.

It is a shame that this happened to an innocent gun.

But, although you couldn't silence a normal revolver I do believe you could cut the noise down quite a bit. All the noise doesn't come out the B/C gap.

The threads don't look like any comp or suppressor I've seen, maybe something akin to a mighty midget grenade launcher of some sort.

I always get a chuckle when watching a film, and a suppressor gets screwed onto a revolver. Then you hear that little 'Phofff' sound when fired.

Did someone forget about the barrel-cylinder gap ? no sound escapes there, right ?

I'm thinking someone with just enough information to be dangerous did it not a true gunsmith .I would worry more about what's been done on the inside maybe an " action/ trigger job" .Pass is my vote also, then again after looking at larger picture maybe the threads are actualyribs to keep gun cool in rapid fire or possibly a way to add weight to the muzzle for better rapid fire control or maybe a way to add a flash hider for night shooting without losing your night vision ,could be a way to desquise gun as a plumbing fixture to throw off a thief lol who knows but still I would pass

Agree, threads have to have a slight angle to work and these seem to be vertical. Also, there seems to be very little finish wear in the grooves or surrounding muzzle area. Is the threaded section also threaded (and therefore removable?)

Take a 6" model 28 (I presume), shorten the barrel, reattach the front sight (rib), and groove the end for...?

Well, if it can be bought cheap, the barrel looks like it could probably be salvaged by trimming and re crowning. I'd want to be sure that was the only modification. Given the location, no telling what the intent was, but I can't help but suspect it was some sort of suppression device. Whether it worked or not is no longer relevant.

I see salvaged Model 28 barrels on eBay all the time. seems like that at the right price, and if he knew a competent gunsmith, the gun could be restored with a new barrel. But I am totally unfamiliar with the situation in Mexico, things might be more difficult down there.

Best Regards, Les

Another problem. I believe that Mexico does not allow private citizens to own certain caliber handguns, and, (again) I think .357 Magnum is one of them. If this is correct, it may be against the law for any Mexican citizen to own this revolver. So the question may be a moot point.

Well I canīt talk too much about it, but my friend planes register it as a .38, as a modified .38/44 Outdoorsman. And use handloads trying to be a ballistic twin of a 1930īs .38/44 High Velocity rounds.

Now that Toolguy said that maybe had a compensator on it, I remember a video about the semiautomatic revolver Mateba and it has a compensator in a form or a small tube at the end of the barrel.

The only other thing besides a compensator or suppressor would be a choke, but of the ones I've seen they are finer thread and the barrel is usually converted to a smoothbore.

If anyone read this and thought "wow, that sounds neat and I want one!" just realize it needs to be registered as an AOW in the US.

I agree with other posts; buy it cheap ($200 ?), have it professionally cut and crowned, and you've got a great shooter. Other than the muzzle, the rest of the gun appears to be in nice condition.

I may have missed this in a thread above, but could this have been one of the S&W's that had a launcher attached for using gas grenades and flares? They were at one time in the LE catalogs.

Close up, they are RH threads, not cut very deeply at all.
The tops of the threads show flattening . Most likely simply running the closest size threading die over the rounded off portion of the custom cut-down bbl.

Why?,,I'd guess for a shot 'choke' or a straight-rifled choke, the latter w/ a couple straight lands/grooves.
The idea is to arrest the spin motion of a shot charge the rifling of the gun bore puts on it just before it leaves the muzzle to give a better pattern.
T/C was using that for a while in their 45Colt/410 Contender.
The lower than normal looking front sight blade has me thinking it's for shot loads also.
I can be way wrong too,,just my guess.

I'd check the bore carefully and if undisturbed or damaged by any of the custom work and salvagable back to the current top rib/ramp,,then I'd cut it back. I think a higher front sight blade may be needed.

cut into the muzzle end of barrel? Reasoning???

If he can get it cheap, I suggest him to start a N frame project with it.

Hannibal, your current photos would have certainly helped in the beginning of your thread, 12 day ago.
Does or did the barrel have rifling all the way to the end, in the beginning pictures?

Does or did the barrel have rifling all the way to the end, in the beginning pictures?
Steve
According to my friend all the barrel had rifling. Included the thread part. I didnīt see it in person until last night that I visited him and only see how it is now with the bobbed barrel.

Before that only had communication with him for internet or phone and I was translating your answers to him.

Buy it cheap. Cut the threads off and re crown the barrel. Then shoot the hell out of it.

The Mighty Midget launchers clamped onto the end of the barrel rather than threading on.

S&W flare guns fired 12 gauge flares. A friend of mine had one and I wanted it really, really bad. Problem was he died before I could buy it from him. His wife/widow offered it to me but I was unwilling to pay the price she wanted. Don't ask and I'll tell no lies.

For some reason I can not quote other messages.

Quote "Buy it cheap. Cut the threads off and re crown the barrel."

rincar: My friend done all those things before, now it is a model 3 1/2" barrel 28,

And how jframejoy said before: Now is a working class manīs threefifty seven (27).

Like the old modelo Trooper was the worrking class manīs python, this is my working class manīs model 27.
