Default What is this Model 29-2 worth?

See the pics, it's SN says it's a 1980 Model 29-2. Has the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. The timing looks good, very little wear and tear. Trigger is nice in both SA and DA. Comes with the wooden case and the cleaning tools. Found it at a local pawn shop, just want to know his price is decent.

If it is for sale less than $1000, it is a steal. That pistol is easily worth that or more.

Long tubes are moving a bot slower than the 6.5'' guns and command less. Like new with very low round count and tight I'd say 800-900 would be a steal. 1000 may be the number. If they have 1500 on it and go down to 1300 would be a little much.

I have seen empty presentation cases bring between $200.00 and $300.00 depending on the condition.

Well, it's a Pawn Shop so what do ya think? Sticker shows $1400 but he said he'd take around $1200... I haven't actually started the serious negotiations yet.

That's an OK buy at $1000 OTD, if you like the long tube. I would start at $900 in $100 bills. There is a LNIB one just like the one you're looking at here in AZ, the guy has been firm at $1400 and it's been sitting for 2 months.

I buy long tubes in all calibers. We have those long range, friendly competitions at the end of a range session, using 2.5" and 8" barrels. It's a blast (pun intended) Actually, we get some amazing shots after we settle down.
Yes, they are a little less desirous to some, but one in nice condition is worth buying to me.
There's something to enjoy about a long barrel .44 mag. I have several long 29's and love em.

I'm in CA. and prices are a little higher here. Closer to 1K or under would be a real deal for me...especially with all the goodies. 1200...if you're really in love and want it.

Pawn shops are a little difficult to determine pawn value to sale value. Cameras etc. aren't worth much because you can go down and get a better one cheaper. Guns are different. Their value increases. But I'll bet he didn't give more than half of what he's asking, which is a larger margin than the original sale was by far. He doesn't want to keep it, he wants to sell it...hopefully.

Deal hard with him and see what happens.

Here's a couple examples I have; M48,M27,M29

I try to keep in mind that they made a gazillion Model 29s, versus the other N-frames. I see them regularly at shows. I am thinking in this area I wouldn't pay over $1,000 for it unless it was like new-in-box. You said it has some wear, so I'd say more like $800 with the long barrel. Short barrels bring more. Just my 2 cent worth. Best wishes, Marc

I'm no expert, but here is my experience in buying two of these guns since 2010.

About 6 years ago I paid exactly $1000.00 for a nearly pristine 29-2, blue, 8 3/8th" barrel, presentation case & tools. An early 1970's example.

I say nearly pristine because of the minor turn line on the cylinder. Now, other than the turn line the gun had not even a tiny scratch or blemish anywhere on the finish.

That was 6 (going on 7) years ago.....and I did manage to negotiate the price from $1200.00 originally. This was at a local gun show from a private seller.

Now, a few years prior to that I bought the same gun except it did NOT come with the presentation case from a local shop.

His price was $600.00 because the gun a few minor scratches on it.

Your description of "wear and tear" is kinda vague. It is difficult for me to see in the pics if your gun has any scratches in the blue finish.

If NO scratches I'd say it is easily worth $1000.00

Hello Forum;
If you can get it for $1000 I'd say you are in good shape. The case and tools has to be in the $150 -$200 range if perfect condition.

My 29-2 with the 6 inch bbl, is also serial numbered to 1980 (N 798XXX) and came to me with case and unopened tools. The case had all blue flocking gone, but the gun appeared unfired! I did a little research and found that 1980 wooden presentation cases had the gun pointing to the right, whereas most all other years have gun pointing left. The GA stocks are correct. Mine was a private sale ay well below $900 and the party selling was highly motivated so for me a good deal, but I would have paid $1k for your longer tube if I saw it in a case. I don't have much other experience in the long tube 29's so defer to other opinions above.

Good luck whatever your choice......one thing for sure....they don't make that gun like that was done in 1980 anymore.

I got my 29-2 in a private sale for $700 no box or tools. $1000 sounds like a good deal.

Good for you. Everyone, remember this. Most pawn shops are in the money business. If an over priced item is sitting on the shelf, that is money that is not working for the store. Ideally, there would be no merchandise on tHe shelves because everyone had paid of the high interest loans.

Nice hand cannon OP!

Truth 5532JWK! Because they are more rare to find I presume. I picked up my M29-3 with a 3" barrel back in late May I think it was and from GunBroker. I won't say what I paid for it... But to me she's worth every darned penny. They don't make them like that anymore. I still love my 629-6... that has gotten hopelessly hooked into the .44Mag/Special round. It was such a hit at the last farm day shoot I put on with everybody; it was the only handgun anyone wanted to shoot of mine. But the M29 is much more refined in regards to balance, (due to the barrel and underlug profile and nicer stocks). Thank God I found my new favorite online .44Mag/Special retailer that stocks a plethora of both loads for the best prices I've ever seen and with a very reasonable flat rate shipping.

I had a like new empty Smith presentation case for a 4 inch N-Frame with all the paperwork and blank warranty card and it brought $400.00 at auction.

From what I can see in the pics, you did fine. The box is worth 200, and the grips probably 150, so you only paid 650 for the metal. Nothing wrong with that.
