Default MOD 58 gun show find. PICS!

I've been wanting to find a shooter grade mod 58 for a little over a year. Today while browsing the isles at the local gun show I stumbled across this shooter grade "S" serial # mod 58. I was hoping to find one with original stocks, but these Herrett's feel great in my hand! Just wanted to share with you guys. Thanks for lookin!

Good find. And the stocks from Steve Herrett are nice too.

I have never owned a Model 58, but I love my Model 57. If I had stumbled across that one, I doubt I could have resisted it!

Default MOD 58 gun show find. PICS!

Well done.....just over 22000 of these were made. They came out in 1964 starting with serial number S256500. I picked one up this week as well but not nearly as good conditioned as yours. My serial number is puts mine in the first 1100 built. Find some magna pc stocks to make it right. I have a set coming from Eagle grips.

maybe its my screen but that does not look like a shooter grade. Looks fantastic. I have mine waiting at the dealer under NJ 30 day wait, 2 more weeks! Can not wait.

I have a 57-1 w/ 8&3/8 barrel and I love shooting it. Thats the reason I began looking for the 58.

Very nice and certainly looks to be a top of the heap as far as shooter grades go!! Nice target grips to boot! What is not to like? I have had my eye open for a 57 or 58 too., hope I stumble across one as nice as yours. Enjoy!

Nice! As others have said, that would be on the top end of a Shooter's Grade gun to me. Finding the original magna grips can be a challenge. I got some from a fellow Forum Member that actually came off a Model 520. Love my Model 58 and hope you enjoy that one!

Well that is hard to say. The book says that the 58 should have only run up to serial s276787 For the period of 1964-1977 and should have converted to an N serial number in 1969 when the S on N frames ended at 333454. With Smith you never know, that is why mine is getting lettered. Sorry I couldn’t help.

Once again if you trust the big book of Smith the diamond magnas were deleted in 1968. But never say never with Smith.

It seems that mine falls right along the cutoff time for the diamond grips so it could have been either. I guess the only way to find out is a letter. Thanks for all the feedback!

Good score. I also go mine at a gun show, one of the few guns I have actually bought at gun shows. They are becoming somewhat scarce and if you really want one you sometimes have to take what you can find.

I see you are from Kansas, so I assume this gun show was in Kansas. Might I ask where in the state it was? In the last 2 weeks I have been to a show in Topeka and another in a one horse town about 30 miles north of Topeka. Neither one was worth the price of admission. Thanks.

It was in Wichita, KS. I have to admit that it was not a very good turn out. Not many dealers and not much selection. I was about to go home empty handed but I got lucky and seen this in a display with a model 28-2. The only 2 pre lock revolvers I seen in the building in decent condition. I would have snagged the 28-2 also, but only had funds to buy one.

I'd say you made the right choice. I'm still looking for the one with my name on it. Congratulations! Let us know how she shoots too.

M58s seem to have had weird demand and sales. I bought mine new in 1978 or 79, and its S/N is S327XXX. Either the frame or the revolver itself sat for almost 10 years.

A letter is the only chance at really knowing ... however ....

Keep in mind that S&W records are for the date shipped, not the date of completion. These were generally slow sellers, so it may have been assembled / finished / ready to ship a considerable time prior to the actual ship date.

Pleased you found one! Enjoy it with pride. Stocks look like Herretts Jordon Troopers, I had many a pair of these, absorb recoil very well.

Excellent revolver, especially if you reload.

The magnas aren't really great if you are shooting with stout loads.

The Herrets will fill your hand better and let you manage recoil easier.

I like the Magna grips and think the Model 58 just does not
look right without them. Enjoy!!

There's one this nice or better at my LGS for $986, plus tax. What kind of offer should I make?

Don't expect to get a reduction. Try for $900, but if push comes to shove, shut up and buy.

Mine was 920 cash out the door. No tax or shipping. Bought it face to face at gun show. He said 1000. I said 900. He said 925. I said 920. We shook hands and then I left.

That's very helpful. Enjoy your 41 wheelgun!

I've had mine for a few yrs . I had a custom shoulder holster ( left handed ) made for it . I found a set of PC Magna grips . It carries well in my shoulder holster . I did have to send it back to the factory as there was a few " issues " the seller didn't mention on his gb ad . All is well now , factory did a great job . It's a keeper !

Default My model 58

I have a question as to the year mine was made. It has N273662 on the butt of the gun and 9364 on the crane with A110 below the number. Help please.

Do a "WTB" for those PC Magnas. A forum member will step up. If you handload, try a 210-215 grain LSWC over 5 grains of Titegroup with a standard primer. Just like shooting .38 Special 158 LSWC's (out of my stock Model 13). Great find!

The book says 1974 to 1977. Maybe someone has lettered one and can narrow it down better.

Unless you're a collector, don't bother with Magna grips. Those Jordan Troopers are FAR superior. They handle the severe recoil MUCH better than factory grips, inc. the target style.

One of the nastiest revolvers to shoot I've ever fired was a M-58 using full loads and Jay Scott fake pearl grips. A friend had Herrett's Jordan grips on his .44 Magnum M-29 and it was a MUCH nicer gun to fire.
