Default Model 36

I just picked up this little model 36 no dash flat latch in a trade. Gun I traded was probably worth a little more, but I didn't like it anyway(and it wasn't a S&W) Serial number is 3039xx, so I think it's a late '62 or early '63, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have one close that they have a good date on? Grip s/n doesn't match, but must date pretty close to gun since number is only 80K higher. No box, papers, or tool. Any other info on it would be appreciated also. Thanks.

Nice looking Chiefs. Congrats on a good trade.

I can't help with the date, but I think you're close. Someone will likely be along soon to get it closer.

Enjoy,

Bob

Good looking Chief! It may well be an optical illusion but in both pics (with stocks and w/out stocks) it appears the bottom edge of that side plates doesn't fit well with the frame. If that is correct it might be worth checking out the internals before running any rounds through it. Or have a GS do it. best of luck, hardase60

For whatever it's worth, Model 36 with serial number 353801 shipped in September, 1964. That's a bit higher than yours, but it is as close as I can get.

Is it ok to shoot +P ammo in this gun? Or should I just stay with standard pressure ammo?

I don't have any dated 36s on my list with very close SNs, but from what I do have, I'd say 1963 by bracketing. While you could shoot +P safely, why would you want to do that? Just not that much ballistic advantage when used in a short barrel, plus it makes recoil recovery more difficult. At least for practice shooting, regular loads are more practical and less expensive, but there's nothing wrong with loading up the cylinder with +P if you are carrying.

Good point. I'll shoot mild loads for target practice and carry it with +P. Well I almost got a birth year gun. Guess I'll have to keep trying.
