I’ve always admired the Model 58’s configuration, but I really don’t want to expand into .41 Magnum. I’ve always liked the “big Model 10” vibe of the 58.

I think the answer to this question is no, but did S&W ever make a .44 Magnum or Special in a heavy barrel, fixed sight configuration like the 58?

I own a 629 fixed sight 2.5" bl 44 mag, this revolver is one of a limited run produced for Camfour several years ago. You can google "camfour 629 44 magnum revolver" for pics and info. I am also an admirer of the 58 and the 41 magnum, over the years I have seen several that had been rebored to 44 or 45.

Interesting - I’ve never heard of that model. I’d start looking for one if they were 4”.

I have seen (and I believe member Doc44 has) one, a factory 4" fixed sight N frame .44 Magnum. A model 58/29? The last time I saw an online listing for one, I believe the asking price was $29,500.

Really like my old stock c.1965 M58, but agree, it would have made a great lineup to have the same concept in .44 and .45 Colt. And while musing - having them in SS would have been nice.

I have a friend that has a 58 in 45 Colt . Hamilton Bowen converted it for him , it was an expensive conversion . He also had him convert a fixed sight 44 spl to 45 colt .

Oh go ahead and expand your horizon's , once you have owned a 41 magnum , you will kick yourself for not having one sooner.
The worst thing I ever did was in 1873 , Dirty Harry had made us young guys 44 magnum stupid . I spotted a lightly used Ruger Blackhawk with a $75.00 price tag, partly hidden tar showed 4X XXXnum and I wanted that $75.00 44 magnum.
My heart dropped when the tag said 41....I told the guy I didn't want it and walked out....never to see another deal like that again . That was the biggest deal I ever blew and regret it still.
Shortly after a policeman buddy wanted a 22 to carry in his boat, I traded him a Rugger 22 pistol for the model 58 (my avatar) he carried on duty....then I learned what a sweetheat the 41 magnum was. reloading and casting bullets for it has expanded it's usefulness to the point that I no longer even want a 44 mag.
Get that model 58...you gonna love it !

Ken I think the cheapest way to get it done with out ruining a vintage 58 is buy one of the current Classic series and have a current 29 cylinder fitted and barrel bored. Still pricey though.

The Model 21-4. It was introduced after 1980 so, based on this being in the 1961-80 section, I don't know if it's in your year range or not. I have one of them from the first Thunder Ranch run, and really enjoy it. Fixed sights and 4" heavy barrel in 44 Special.

I suggested a stainless equivalent of the Model 58 in .45 ACP when I was in USAF Security Police circa 1967. Needless to say, it didn't happen.

What I probably should do is keep an eye out for a user quality 58 and see how I get on with the cartridge. That way, if I ever decide to blow a chunk of the retirement account later on I could send it off to Ham Bowen for a conversion to .44 Special or even Magnum - but who knows, I might fall for .41.

I was in your shoes several yrs ago, wanted something that I couldn't have, a fixed sight 44 mag. I found a suitable police carried model 58, then a 41 mag model 58 barrel showed up on the forum that had been rebored to 44 mag specs. I left it with a gunsmith to bore the cylinder out and waited and waited and waited, until a few yrs later a new 44 mag cylinder showed up on the forum. It had some pitting from the flocking in the pres case, but otherwise new. It dropped in beautifully, had a new gunsmith swap bbls and check out all the specs.

Bowen no longer does such work; gave it up a couple of years ago. My recollection is that there were several factors, one of which was the difficulty in replacing the contractor who had done the re-boring work.

There was recently one on gbroker. It had been listed several times. The listings ranged from $26,500 to $29,900. No bids that I recall. The description claimed it was one of three. The only two I know of are yours and the one Handejector auctioned off. I wonder if that one was his?

I have a 629-6 Carry Comp from the Performance Center just like WPWarhawks. The letter from S&W said they made 822 of them. Good luck in finding one for sale. I'm not parting with mine. It's a little heavy for around town but it's always on me when in the north woods where there are critters that bite and scratch.

OP - If you are open to .45 ACP, just find a shooter grade Model of 1917 or a Brazilian contract Model of 1937 and you'll have your big bore model 10.
