Ultimate safe queen
Here's a question for all of you avid model 29 collectors. I was browsing Gun Broker and I ran across an auction for a 29-2. Now this gun is absolutely new, unfired, in the box. We know that it's NIB because it is still in it's factory sealed shipping box which has never had it's seal broken! The bid was up to about $3500 with 20 mins left. My question is: In the event that you are the lucky winner, do you open the box!?

I'd open it. Just to make sure I didn't spend 3500 on a box of rocks!

What he said---and then some!!
Any and all who bid on that item should be put up for a medal for bravery---or committed to an appropriate institution-----or maybe free tuition to enroll in RISK MANAGEMENT 101- REMEDIAL----all depends on your point of view I reckon.
I wish them well---especially the high bidder---but I'm not holding my breath.

There is no way a plain jane 29-2 with no special provenance is worth $3500, box or no box, sealed or opened.

I notice there is a three day inspection period. So you win the bid, open it up, find a flaw and send it back. I did not see any stipulation that it could not be opened. What will its value be at that point? I suppose the buyer does not plan to open it. Collecting habits are very puzzling at times.

I was bidding on it. I went to $3450. I was planning on opening it and documenting it with photos. I have been looking for a flawless Nickel 6 1/2 to go with my blue 6 1/2 29-2. Kinda bummed I did not get it but at the same time 40 years in a box, you are taking a gamble on the condition. If I paid $3,500(shipping, FFL) I would have accepted the risk but that was it..

I can see it now. My gun buddies come over and the conversations starts: "You guys want to see this really beautiful Smith & Wesson card board box I just won on Gun Broker? It was a steal at 5 grand!" After some swooning, gun buddy laments: " It's too bad Smith went away from card board. I'll never own one of those junky, new, plastic boxes with the pad lock hole!"

Hopefully, you wouldn't end up like Geraldo did opening Capones' vault. I can see it now, all kinds of anticipation. The box opens and there is some crumpled, brown paper and a hand full of brown dust that was once a gun!

I wouldn't touch that one with a ten foot pole. Rust? Reminds me of when I used to collect old 78 records. I paid a premium for a "still sealed" set of shellacs...when I finally did get the urge to cut it open, I discovered that one of the discs was in pieces.

I guess you could x-ray it, but until that box is opened... maybe there is a perfect NIB 29-2 in it or maybe there isn't. LOL. Of course I don't have any reason to doubt that there is. Just can't see paying $5k to own and look at a cardboard box. You can't ever open it, unless you don't mind losing 50% in depreciation anyways. First world problems for sure. Still, 20 years from now maybe it brings $10k.
