Default Model 57 Mismatched Grips?

At a local gun show this weekend I picked up a Mod 57 and a mod 58. Here are pictures of the 57. A few other people looked it over and it looks as if it was never fired. The presentation box may have come from an earlier period. Serial # is N770XXX.
I have a question on the grips. I know that we can't always get a perfectly color matching set on a gun, but these really vary in color. Also, one has a small chip. I am wondering if they came from the factory that way. Anyone seen some that were this far off?
Also someone had put some gold coloring in some of the lettering, which I hope to clean out later. I will post pics of the Model 58 in another thread.

I'd hazard a guess and say one of the original grip panels was broken and one of the two is a replacement. Are there any serial numbers written on the inside of the grips? How do the panels match up to the backstrap?

That revolver did not leave the factory with those two grip panels attached to it.

When the factory was making grips they were picky, not perfect but picky

These grips were recovered from the Smith and Wesson dumpster by an employee. They were tossed by the factory who judged them to be unacceptable . . . I kind of like them and am glad they were rescued

Sometimes, you find a pair of stocks with two panels that are entirely different in terms of color and figure. Not often, but is does happen. However, the panels on your Model 57 looks like they don't match well in terms of overall shape so they may not be original (to each other).

I meant to say that the serial # is N774xxx, which I believe puts it as being made in 1980. I do have some take-off stocks put aside that I might be able to use. Question now is which type of extractor cutout was used in 1980; the football or the semi-circle?

Those are right or left only grips. If you look at it from only the right or only the left you'll never know.

In 1980, the left panel had a relieved area to aid in extraction. The complete cutout came along several years later.
