This past weekend I picked up this older Model 58. It definitely has had some use, but all the workings seem to still be pretty tight. I have always wanted a 58, but just haven't seen too many of them around.

Hey you got an early one , " S " model . It shows holster wear . It could of been an issue model to a police officer . The grips look correct so please don't change them out . Just learn to shoot it as it came to you with those grips . I had to purchase those grips for mine .
Don't shoot it " stiff " arm , like your shooting a semi auto . Relax your arms and elbows but lock your wrists , stand straight and let the recoil come back through both arms , elbows and into your body . You will find it's an easy gun to use and enjoy , once you learn how to shoot it , even with those grips with loads from " mild to wild " . A 210 gr bullet @ 1000fps or a little less is a lot of fun for all day shooting . A 210-220 gr bullet loaded with 7.5-8.0grs of Unique is " THE " std load for the 41 / Elmer Keith . The sights on the 58 are " spot on " accurate with that load .

And since you can now buy 0.41 Special brass (a round that does not exist!!) you can use the same load in a "non-magnum calibre" and thus avoid the "Magnum Police" in an indoor range. I have two Model 57s, one 6", one 8 3/8" and use the 0.41 Special. Enjoy, Dave_n

I don't plan on changing the grips. The right one has the serial number stamped on the inside which matches the frame number.
I am a little familiar with shooting these, as I have three other Mod 57's. Also some Mod 29's, and a couple of S&W500 Magnums. I do like to shoot the larger magnum models.

Great find.....I hunted for mine for about 10 months this year. I saw it on a local gun board in February and then it disappeared until last month when it arose again. This time the seller was asking 950 dollars for it when back in February he was only asking 750. When I saw pictures of my gun, it was really well worn with some scuffs and surface rust that caused me to almost walk away. But with the urging of several members here I went and took a closer look and ultimately wound up getting the gun for $550 dollars.....I guess the 9 month wait was worth it. The gun really is in better shape than I thought and I have sent off for a letter to validate if the LDC stamped on the right side of the gun really does mean it was a Louisiana Department of Corrections service weapon.....I want to believe that it is but like we say never buy the story buy the gun. I bought a service python this year as well and the seller told me it was his great uncle’s service weapon with the El Paso Sherriff’s office, being in Texas I thought it would be cool to have an old service weapon. But when I had it lettered it was not originally shipped to Texas. It was a bit local in that it was shipped to Lawrence Kansas in 1962 and made its way here.......Here is my 58 along with my 57......I am on the hunt for some original grips for the 58 though.

Nice! There was a super clean 58 with N serial number at Ron Peterson's yesterday. It looked too darn clean to me. I don't think the 58's were made with the high polish of a 27, but I could be wrong.

You can shoot it and see what you think with those stocks, but you may like it better with targets or Pachs. No biggie to change stocks and you needn't throw the old ones away.
