Default S&W Model 51 Questions **Photos added**

Haven't posted much or lately but, I could really use some insight into a model 51 I'm considering. I'd estimate condition at VG and the S/N is 1124xx. Can someone identify approximate model year and how collectible it might be? I've always wanted an M48 which I believe is the K frame with the 51 being a J frame.

I would guess about 1966-67...I don't see many around at all.Guess the .22 mag in a J frame was not a hot seller..Dont know how collectable in VG, unless the grips match and all the box and stuff is there....Grips are mighty small for me.that is easily corrected though.

Some folks seem to be drawn to certain size revolvers of certain calibers, I for one like .22 Magnums and look for the older pre model 51's and early model 48's with the 3 choices of barrel lengths in the model 48. The very loud report and the muzzle flash are impressive but deafening so please wear ear & eye protection. My opinion is that they are not great candidates for a "Kit" or "Woods" Gun for those reasons although they are a more powerful alternative to the .22LR the short barrels hurt their performance exception being the newer offerings in ammunition specifically for those shorter barrels. The Magnum ammunition is more expensive and was less available during the ammunition shortage. All this is a personal opinion & observation so I sure hope others will join in with their reasons for and against or whatever.

So I did buy it. Has original diamond grips, it's better than VG (almost too good ??). Has the papers and the blue box but, the label is not readable so there's no assurance it's the original.

The bluing is near mint which makes me wonder if it was re-blued. Under 10x I can't find any blemishes or evidence of refinishing. You Smith experts, anything I should check for to be sure its original quality?

Will post photos shortly.

I've owned a model 51 since 1973. It was the first pistol I ever purchased. I have the original grips, but have replaced them with packmyer grips. The gun is a tack driver. It is my favorite gun. I think it is the perfect kit gun or for just that walk in the woods where you need protection from those rabbits and squirrels.

Fine looking Mod 51. If you shoot it and decide you do not like it let me know I would be interested.
