Default Model 29 purchase

I recently got bit by the Smith and Wesson bug after not having bought anything for a few years.

I went to a local gun show and found a NIB 1980 Model 29 8/38 inch nickel with wood case, papers and tools.

I've wanted a nickel 29 for years now, so I shelled out $1,350 for it. I'm still smarting from the buy a little bit. I've never spent that much on any gun, but it's a beauty! I figured what the heck.

I think I did OK price wise. Any thoughts?

Some guy just bought a pristine nickel 6-1/2 inch Model 29-2 for $1275 so you did just fine.

Nice purchase. Get some polish for it, I prefer the world famous s&w nickel finish. Any nickeled n frame gets my vote.

You did way better than OK, brother. If you ever get tired of this beauty, let me know.

I don't see that happening anytime soon, if ever, but who knows...

Yeah, you did OK with that purchase. Model 27's and model 29's of that vintage are a bit pricey nowadays, especially in as good a shape as yours is in and also with the presentation case. I paid just a little less than that for an 8 3/8" 27-2 in nickel earlier this year (with presentation case) and paid more than that for a 6" 27-2 in nickel with the presentation case a couple of months later. Both of mine looked to be unfired except for the factory proof rounds when I got them. They aren't that way any more though!

That's my next dilemma, to fire or not to fire. I can't bring myself to do it any time soon. A box of Winchester white is 55.00 dollars at Fin Feather and Fur!

Unless you live in some draconian state that doesn't allow ammo purchases online, you can find 44 Mag ammo for fairly reasonable pricing. Much less than $55 a box of 50. It's not too hard to find 44 Mag ammo for around $35 for a 50 round box of factory ammo online.

I reload, so shooting 44 Mag costs me less than 20 cents a round.

I hear you. The only ammo at the show was Fiocchi and one other brand I never heard of. I'm partial to Winchester, Remington, Federal, etc., so I just bought one box to have since I now have a gun in that caliber.

A Model 29-2, Blue, w/Presentation case, etc., shipping & FFL fee included sold for just short of $2,000. I think you did quite well. Now would you like to see my 2 Nickel Model 57's?

You paid EXACTLY "Fair Market Value" for that 29!

Fair Market Value has always been defined as the amount a willing buyer will give to a willing seller for the goods.

Provided the Seller didn't take your money at gunpoint, and you both were happy when you went out the door with that beauty........you paid exactly the right amount, no matter what anyone else has to say.

I don't have that kind of coin but if I did I would have probably been trying to keep that out of your hands and into mine, but that's just my 2 cents.

My 29-2 (1980) has a "flocking challenged" presentation case but gets shot and enjoyed quite a bit.

Enjoy it. At least a box worth before you clean and make it a safe queen..........nothing like a box of full load maggies to start (or end) your day at the range.
