I only shoot the hot stuff when sighting in for hunting or getting used to a load for self-defense purposes.
No sense putting your body or your gun through unnecessary abuse when you can load and shoot target loads comfortably.

I too have been handgun hunting for over 20 years. Mainly with rugers, I do all my own gunsmithing work & hand loading for them. 454 's are nice, for me with my hand loads in 44 & 45 colt I can take anything walking or crawling. But to each his own, some prefer 475 or 50 cal at 900 for deer!
The loads I shot were my hand loads 210 xtp with 16grs 2400 maybe 1050 fps, 2nd was 215 SWC w/6.2grs tight group, neither is "hot" especially in my ruger 4 5/8" but in this gun, the blast and the recoil felt over the top for the loads. The 2 41 special loads I used were better but I finally found a better set of N frame camo pacs last night to try, I love N frames but my hand size doesn't like SQ butts.
