What do I have here, S&W model 30 32 Long?
A close friend handed me this today and said it's his wife's pistol and asked me to check it out and clean it. Of course I said sure and will most likely take it to a trusted gunsmith for the cleaning and inspection.
Numbers on the butt read 6824XX. Inside the crane it MOD 30 999XX and a separate line with a 5 below that number. Three inch, nickel .32 SW long.
Any info would be appreciated, thank you.

It is a Model 30 in .32 Smith & Wesson. The serial number is the one from the butt or 6824XX placing its production in about 1959. The other number was used in production to keep parts together. .32 Smith & Wesson ammo is reasonably available and is easy to shoot.
These little guns are pretty accurate, at close range, and a picnic to shoot.

I bought 695837 a couple week's ago, also with flat latch and in nickel. The S&W letter dates it as leaving the factory in February of 1961 so yours could very well be from 1959 as heater1 suggests above. The only way to date it closer is to get a S&W letter. Great little guns.

The caliber should be marked on the right side of the barrel. It should be 32 S&W "Long".

And long range, I might add.
