I believe that would be in 1976-1977 manufacture date range.

Sounds like Model 36-1 and that serial number should place it in the first quarter of 1977, probably Jan/Feb time frame. It might be as early as Dec 1976, but I doubt it. And what the KalamazooKid said is correct!

A big Wyoming welcome, OL239850!

I have 36-1 J479253, which I believe shipped in 1976. It's the one on the far right in the photo.

My 3-inchers (from left) include an '89 36-3 Lady Smith, an '89 36-6 Target, a '55 (no model number Chiefs Special) and the '76 36-1.

Slàinte,

Bob

ps: I covet saemetric's DAO 36-8!

I had one bought in 77. 3" HB Square Butt. Excellent shooter but harder to conceal. I was told they were designed for the Air Marshalls but never picked up. Unsubtantiated

The model 36 was made in both 2" and 3" versions with both round and square butt styles. The heavy barrel 36-1 was only made in 3".

I have a vintage M36 with a 3" Bull Barrel and Square Butt. It is an extremely capable gun for carrying serious heavy duty SD load in as the extra bbl. length and heft (of the Bull bbl.) along with the slightly larger SB Grips do a lot to soak up recoil. About the only reason not to use one is for Pocket Carry. Just too large for that purpose. For OWB, IWB carry it SHINES! I find the original wooden SB Grips with a Tyler T Grip works perfectly.

A J-prefix serial number with five numerical digits would make it a late 1969 - early 1970 production. If it were J532XXX (J plus six digits) it would be late 1976 - early 1977.

A nickel 3" HB was my EDC when I lived in Miami. Always hoped S&W would come out with a SS version but never happened until they went to .357, and by then it was a totally different gun.

I carried it with the now-discontinued WW 200 grain service loads.

My Model 36-1 is 3" HB (1976) and s/n J 5913XX. It is a very nice shooter and quality made gun from that era. My EDC is a Model 637-2 and is carried for the +P capability and of course reduced weight.

If I needed to carry the 36-1 I would not at all feel outgunned.

Love to shoot them both!

Actually it did happen . . . in 1984 a major S&W Distributor in New York City (John Jovino) ordered a special run of stainless 3" heavy barrel, square butt, Model 60s in .38 Special.

Boy, I would have jumped on one of those but by 1984 I had moved to Los Angeles, and we all know what that means...

I see this is an older thread but I wondered if the OP ever saw that the gun he bought was from 1969-1970 not 1976-77 like he was originally informed. His is a 6 character S/N...a J plus 5 numbers not 6 numbers. That is the 1st year they changed to the J prefix.

This is one I've got on hold with a local dealer (Just awaiting my Permit to Acquire form to come back from the Firearms Registry). New South Wales Police Force use to issue 3" model 36's to Comissioned Officers and Female Police Officers back in the day.

I believe that 's a rumor. It was a std. production gun after it was made originally for NYPD police women. Massad Ayoob has mentioned this several times in magazine articles.

USAF OSI used it for a time, in Bianchi inside waistband holsters, but I doubt that air marshals ever used or considered these guns.

Someone probably started that rumor to glamorize the guns and help sales.

I've owned three of them and all performed very well. They have several advantages over true snubs, and are not difficult to conceal in an inside waistband holster.

Some distributor ordered some in stainless, in the Model 60 lineup. I had one and hated having to sell it when I needed money badly. It did go to a good home, a neighbor.

I replaced it with a Model 60-4, which is a fantastic little gun.

I carried the M-36-1 wth smooth Magna rosewood stocks (silver S&W medallions) and a Tyler adaptor.

By Commissioned Officers, do you mean above the rank of Sergeant, like Inspectors? Some here use the term to refer to all sworn police personnel. NSW and Victoria issued Model 10's to most personnel, some with three-inch barrels, some with heavy four-inch. I saw those on Aussie TV shows and many were later sold in the USA.

I forgot which state you're in, but have read that Queensland used to issue these and Rugers (type unknown).

I know we have members in Perth (WA) and in Sydney (NSW).

Yes Texas Star. Commissioned Officers for us means Inspectors and above. 3" Model 10's were the standard issue in New South Wales for uniformed officers (including females after their own uniform changes - originally female officers had to carry their 3" 36's in an issued handbag).
