Default Date & Info Needed for Model 60

I have an opportunity on a nice model 60 but would appreciate some info and opinions on the price. I was not able to get pictures but here is what I do know.

Model 60-no dash
Serial is 409804
2" barrel
38 Sp
Box (NOT correctly numbered to this revolver), papers, wax paper, sealed tool kit (no screw driver)
I didn't pull the grips but they look original and like new
It has been fired, but I would call condition 95-97%
The seller is calling this "high polished"
I did some poking around and have found what is called "bright satin" in one of the books.

Info I am seeking:

Date of manufacture???

Is there such a thing as "high Polish" or is this the same as "bright satin"??

How can I be sure this is either "bright satin" or "high polish" and not someone sitting at the bench with some flitz and working it over???

If you were a buyer what would you pay???

If you were selling what would you be hoping this would bring???

I appreciate any and all help and opinions.

That is a very early example. According to the SCSW 4th, the first production run (1965) was numbered from 409802 to 410698. There were 38 pre-production examples made with lower numbers. The R prefix serial numbers started in 1969 at R1.

All that stuff is nice, but probably doesn't add a lot of value, since the serial numbers don't match.

There would not have been a screwdriver in the package anyway, since this is a fixed sight revolver.

I can't help you with the price, since the only Model 60 I ever owned was a slightly used one with the R number. I paid $450 for it.

Photos would help here for a determination of finish originality. The very early ones (in addition to the bright polish) had color casehardened stainless hammers and triggers instead of the later hard chromed carbon steel parts.

If it is original and not re-polished, I would guess high three figures.

On an early gun, it is more likely one that has been polished out by the owner.

I'm not disputing your word, but I'm curious how you know this?

Two issues:

1. 409802 is the lowest number. The OP's gun is 409804. What happened to 409803?

2. We know for a fact, they were not always assembled in serial order. It is well established, for example, that the first Combat Magnum that was assembled had a higher serial number than the second one assembled (I'd have to look the numbers up to be precise). So, unless you have access to the floor logs (or have spoken to someone who does) how would you know that 409802 was the first Model 60 assembled in regular production and 409804 was the second one?

Again, this is not a challenge to your statement. I'd just like to know its source.

Thanks!
