Great carry gun at a good price. Mine's from 1957 and a little worn also, but shoots just fine.

Carried a lot, but should be tight.
A great CHL revolver for DAO only.

Nice find! I got one with the “floating J” serial number too. I believe 71-72. I recommend getting some grip adapters for it as well. I got the BK version. Took about 3 days from time of order to get them. I ordered the blemished version. I’m still trying to find the blemish.

Nice gun. I love my 640, but a 38 would be a close second choice.
I'm considered weird because I like the looks of the M38 and its kindred.

I carried a model 38 for twenty years. It was my BUG/OD. I retired it and bought a model 649. I still take my M38 for a ride a couple of times a month.

Posters and owners of these earlier aluminum frame snubs have reported it is possible for the frame to crack underneath the forcing cone. You may want to check your 38 before and after range sessions. While I am fond of +P ammunition, it may be wise to restrict your gun to standard pressure 158gr service ammo (for which this gun was designed) and WCs. Don't know about handloads...

I never shoot +p 38s in any gun. if I want more power I use a 357mag.I checked it real good before buying it. I carry 158 rn lead 38s in my snub nose guns it worked for cops for along time.

With your "J" plus a 5-digit serial number I believe you're in the 1969-1970 era. Congrats on a great one.

My wife has...
My wife has a nickel one. Me and my son agreed right off that she wouldn't be able to shoot it with defense loads. Hogue one piece monogrip fixed that to the point that it's downright FUN to shoot.

The only M38 I ever got had a cracked frame. Sold it back to the pawn shop I got it from for less then what I paid for it but did not tell them about the cracked frame....
They never did get anyone to buy it.
Got a M638 from the same place. No cracked frame in it.
A summer CC front pocket gun.
