Model 15-3 info and price check?
Looking to purchase a blued 4" 15-3, serial number 1K3**. Can anyone tell me an approximate age and current value? It's in pretty good shape. It has some minor wear and handling marks in a couple spots, and a few small rust spots that should clean up. Appreciate any info.

Location affects price. Here in California that would be at least $500.

1970.. and rust does not clean up. It is permanent, you may make it look better but it's always there.
Depending on what you call some and small value is about $350 or so.

That's pretty much what I was getting at. It will look a little better once it's cleaned up but it's not a collector piece by any means. Not a beater either, very little bluing wear.

Ended up getting it for $260. I cleaned it up and it is pretty nice. Needless to say I'm happy.

Nice-good price. I have a 15-3 from 1972. They are great revolvers. Are grips numbered to it?

Hmm, not sure. I did have them off but didn't notice any numbers. I'm guessing they would be marked on the back side somewhere? They appear to be original.

Stocks are marked on the inside of the right panel. Nice looking Combat Masterpiece.

S&W stopped numbering their stocks in the mid to late 70's so you might have ones that are marked. If so it should be a straight line stamping of the stocks on the bottom of the right panel.

Rust does "clean up" and rust is removable.
What doesn't clean up and what isn't restorable is the finish that existed under the rust. Unless the rust layer was so thin it didn't fully break through, but even this will still usually leave a "spot" colored differently.
Soak the rust affected areas with a CLP until softened then scrape it off with a copper chisel or scrubber, but must be solid copper. The rust will be removed, but usually there will be a bare spot due to the finish being compromised. Just keep it wiped down with CLP and rust shouldn't return.
NEVER leave rust unattended on a gun. It will only get worse and continue to grow. It must be removed and treated.
