Value? 17-3 Factory Refinished Nickel
I'm looking at a 17-3 right now that is in nickel. Pinned 6 inch barrel, blued hammer/trigger/etc. I've pulled the grips off and there is a 1.70 stamp and a square with R-N in it. There is also a star under the ejector star. The finish is a little cloudy but I think it would clean up. Side plate and the rest of the markings are clean, evidence of a factory refinish.
What would a gun like this be worth? Seller is asking $925 plus tax.

Definately sounds like it was refinished at S&W in January of 1970. Hurts a little but at lest it was a factory refinish. Now you say the trigger and hammer are blued? Do you mean cas hardened? I personally think it's a little over price. I am no expert but believe around $750 would be about right. They go for in the $700 to $1100 range depending on condition and any box or tools with them. Does it have anything like box or tools with it?

Yes sorry meant case hardened trigger and hammer, blued sights/extractor etc. No box or papers, its wearing pach presentations. A knowledgeable colleague of mine said 500-600 tops since its not one of the original nickel guns. Serial is K8744x. The finish could use some love too.

Well, if it were original factory nickel with a letter it would be worth about 10X what he is asking. Yes ten times. If it is a nice S&W refinish $750 as mentioned above would be OK.

Unless it is really really nice I'm with your "knowledgeable colleague" on value at $500-$600. As a refinished gun, even though factory, I'd value it at about 70% of an original finish (versus 50% on a non-factory refinish). Where I shop very nice original finish 17-3s are in the $700-$900 range with $900 likely having box/docs with it. Good luck.

You may be able to polish the nickel finish with Flitz.
