Default Correct stocks for my Model 36 - right on the line?

I bought in an auction, and received today a Model 36. It is gorgeous - probably 98% condition. The only thing was, it had a set of Herrett stocks on it.

I would like to buy a set of correct stocks, but after looking a SCSW, I don't know which will be correct - diamond or non-diamond.

The serial number is 680620. It is marked Mod 36 (with no dash) and it does not have the flat latch.

As it is a Mod 36 and not a 36-1, would it have the diamond stocks?

Thanks. Jim

Model 36-1 is the three-inch heavy barreled version.

You may never know the original stocks, if the serial no. is when the transition took place, beginning in 1966.

I'll let someone else check your serial no. and see when the gun was made. But the stocks with diamond would have been used as long as the supply lasted and someone may have found a bucket of them later than usual so the gun may have had diamonds several years after the change occurred.

Unless you're a collector, remember that most of us into guns removed those original stocks and replaced them with some that felt better in the hand and reduced recoil. If you find original stocks that really fit your frame well, I 'd add a Tyler adaptor.

Congrats on the purchase of your Chiefs Special. Based on your serial number I'm guessing it would have had magna stocks without the diamond. Did you get a round or square butt?

With that serial number, your gun most likely shipped Aug/Sep time frame 1968. The diamond pattern stocks were discontinued earlier that year, but your gun could very well have shipped with the diamond pattern stocks. So I think you would be safe with either style. JMHO

I would guess a letter would state "checkered walnut service stocks" but not the style. The date may tell you, and based on the SN I would guess non-diamond style.

It is a round butt. I have a set of non-diamond stocks on the way. When I receive them, I will mount them and post a picture here of the 36.

Jim, here are some photos of my Chief's Special with its original stocks. As you can see, my Model 36 stocks don't have the diamond.

Hope this helps.

God bless,
Birdgun

Good photo above. The non-diamond stocks have the wider checkered area that was only used for about 2 years (1967-'69 or so).

Here's a follow-up. Got some non-diamond stocks for it. Perfect fit. The gun was listed as being in "fair" condition, but cleaned up beautifully. One ding on the frame above the cylinder - and a slight turn ring.

As promised, here's some pics.
