Default The “WOW” gun of your collection?

I have people over on occasion that don’t really appreciate my level of gun ownership but express some interest. This seems to include neighbors, inlaws, co-workers, etc. Seems to really pique their interest when I bring out a gun or two - in my case, revolvers.

Which ONE do you bring out? For me, it’s the nickel 27, just has that WOW factor. What say you?

That's a beauty, all right!! I have a couple of nice ones, and I'll try to round up a picture or two.

Lacks the flair of your nickle, but it's hard to beat the Model 27. Here's mine in blue, with Ivory stocks:

Best Regards, Les

I can't argue with you on a nice model 27, Kid. I would drag one of my 27's out to show off too.

Either this 4":

Or maybe my 6":

Or maybe my long tom:

All 3 were unfired except for the factory test rounds when I got them. They have had a few rounds through them since then, but not many.

Beautiful. And keep in mind I’m talking the gun you bring out to show “Uncle Larry” who’s never seen something so awesome. The look on their faces is priceless!

When it comes to non-gun folk, I have lots of WOW guns.

Hard to go wrong with a Model 27

I have several handguns that are kept out on display in my office. Every so often I change them around a bit.

This tends to bring up firearms conversations even from non-firearms people.

Right now the Deluxe Texas Sesquicentennial Commemorative is the only Smith and Wesson out

Previous pieces on display in my office have been my Deluxe Texas Ranger Commemorative

I know, but it is not just a Texas thing

My Snake Eyes have also been out

As well as my 50th Anniversary HK

There is my Colt Bicentennial Set which I do not have a photograph of all the drawers open at once. . . . need to shoot that one day

I also need to get a glass top display made for my Smith and Wesson Model 45 so I can put it out

Once we get to talking, I let the conversation lead me into what is brought out next. Half the time it is my carry piece (gun folks) other times it is often a Model 27 (non-gun folks) for the nice finish and checkered top strap

This 8 3/8" Model 57 gets a little attention when you hand it to a looker.

27s and 28s can also be impressive.

Default The “WOW” gun of your collection?

Keeping it in the Smith family a couple of 25-5s.

Outside the Smith family my Broomhandle and Lugers are good conversation starters.

If these don’t grab them I then bring out The SAAs.
Then I like to finish the conversation off with my 62 python.

It truly depends on the audience and I must also say -- the setting.

If we are on the gun range, my Coonan tends to impress most easily. Big bark, huge ring of fire.

If it's about exclusivity, my Performance Center SD-9 or PPC-9 have that.

If it's about making the finest targets, the PC 845 Limited or the Walther GSP in .32 Wadcutter.

If it's about the precision feel, trigger and smoothness of the slide on frame, one of the S&W Model 52's has that handled.

For the "your first guess is only half right", it's a custom Bill Davis PPC gun, a 6-inch stainless Python barrel mounted to a 1982 Ruger Service Six frame.

I have just two REAL favorites out of 14.
1 - S&W Model 29 44 Magnum purchased in 1972-73.
2- Ruger SR1911 in 10mm purchased a few months ago.

I dont have much of a collection, but my 27-8 five inch is probably the one that got the most attention. If the revolver doesn't, the Culina English Walnut stocks usually do. Nobody has an 8 shot Model 27 over here, and nobody has Culina stocks over here.

I agree with Sevens, it depends on the audience which one turns out to be a Wow factor, sometimes it is the cased guns (Model 29, Model 14). sometimes the "art works", sometimes the "working guns".

One thing I have noticed with visitors (gun and non gun folks) at my place is that as soon as the safe is open and one can see all the beautiful (to me of course) Smiths, Colts, fine blue steel and walnut shotguns, and rifles there for the grabbing.....the first, and I mean almost every single time guns that come out for handling and discussion.............are the war horses!

Invariably the first long gun is the M1 Garand, the first handgun is the Ithaca 1943.....passing up all those gorgeous Smiths, etc. I know tomorrow is Veterans Day, but this happens almost every time whether they are first time visitors to my place or my grown kids....so go figure.

A lot of times those two are the only ones that come out and the stories range from "when I was in the ..." to "I remember so and so could really shoot that piece".

So I guess it is how you want to judge the "Wow" factor whatever floats your boat doesn't matter....you just can't go wrong with whatever you chose. Those displays above are simply breath-taking.. beautiful guns..in beautiful display settings. You guys have the bug a lot worse than me...but I'm trying to catch up!

Remember the ones who didn't come home tomorrow.

Definitely some 'Wow' factor guns here. I've had some beautiful guns over the years but these days most of them only wow folks that know what they're looking at and can appreciate them from the enthusiasts perspective.

The S&W revolver I have that gets the most "Wow, that's cool" comments is my Marc Krebs built .45ACP M28-2 'CROWBAR'. Krebs is best known for his 1911 and AK variant work, but back around '87 he built one custom revolver and this it. It is an example of a modern gunfighter's revolver, every modification was made with a fast draw and fast shooting in mind.

This one also gets lots of "Wow, that's cool" remarks. It is my King's Gun Works custom 1948 Colt Commercial Gov't. It's a well preserved example not only of the postwar Colt Gov't Model but also of the custom work that shops were doing back in the 70's when names like King's, Capone, Swenson, Behlert, Hogue, and Clark were who you called for top notch custom 1911 work.

My M1A SOCOM EBR is the one that get's the "Wow, that's bad ***" votes, it comes out when the talk turns to black guns.

My Clark custom Meltdown Colt 1991A1 compact gets an honorable mention because it elicits the most variety of comments, from "Wow, that's beautiful" to "Wow, that's ridiculous" and all points in between.

To most it's just another S&W 44 magnum. To me it's the buy of my life, so far. So I go Wow when I look at it.

Because they are not so pretty I often forget the old war horses that should not go unrecognized in my pile of guns......I don’t quite think of what I have as a collection but more of a menagerie of what I like. But here are two American pieces that should always be on my list of Wow! guns. My Augusta Arsenal rebuild based off of a WWI Colt frame and a type III Remington Rand slide and my 1917.

My 5" pre 27 would have to be my WOW gun, wearing its Herrett Ropers in American black walnut.

I define myself as a shooter /accumulator, not a collector per say!

My 547 3" seems to generate a lot of attention. Many people take a quick look it and say nice Model 13 you have. I then say read the caliber on the barrel. Then its open up and they see that funny looking extractor system and say W.T.F!

I find its a rare person that knows about that gun at all and even rarer to find some one that has ever seen or held one before.

Other than that one I have a Indian Arms.380 that is virtually unknown to most people. I have a nice Model 29 8 3/8 in the wood box and that seems to garner a lot of attention as that one most all shooters know a lot about. Thank you Dirty Harry.

These rate #1 & #2, not in any order.

Blue is a marked Utah Highway Patrol (retired) 27-1 from 1967
Nickel doubles as a survival/rescue mirror.

The only wow I hear about any of my old worn out guns is "WOW, you mean that old thing still shoots"?

Probably the two WOW guns in my collection is my S&W 629 8 3/8 .44 and my 007 marked Walther P99.
Some people that get to see the inside of my safe are just amazed to the size of my collection!

I agree it depends on the audience which to choose.

For someone not that into guns I'd probably grab this one.
It's kind of like a piece of art.

For someone into revolvers and different I'd get this one.

Now for someone into old school and precision like me it would be my baby.
This is "my" gun.

For someone who is in my home, and mention handguns, I invite then into my home office where I have some antique/early hand ejectors in display cases on my desk. Depending on how that conversation goes, they might be invited downstairs to my gun vault.

A Lomont Custom Auto Mag, 16" octagonal barrel chambered for 44 AMP, Leupold scope.

It's not a Smith but it still says WOW.

As an accumulator of shooter-grade hardware, it's a tough call, as most of my stuff is worn, some even refinished (audible gasp).

I'd probably impress my history loving, old-movie-buff friends with this presentable Colt m1903, made 1929.

.41 Colt Thunderer.
Nothing fancy about it other than it was given to me by the last train robber in Wyoming.

Gunsights

I use to hang out at his restaurant and motel when I was in college and got to know him quite well.
When he sold out and moved back east with his daughter, he gave me the gun.

Default Thread needs some tiny examples

These are the three that have generated the most recent ooohs and aaahs.

1955 Centennial (most non-gunners have never seen one)

The one OTHERS always want to hold and fondle is the nickel 29-2 with 8 3/8" barrel. So, I guess size does matter.

Or this gold plated 1903 Colt

Default The “WOW” gun of your collection?

Well forgive me for coming back to this thread so often but I seem to forget more than I remember and just saw this one in the back of the safe. Not reallly a wow gun but in combination with the grips I think it makes and impression......my model 29-2 with custom carbon fiber grips made by the son in law not very practical for shooting or gripping but certainly for showing off.

My "wow guns" vary based on day of the week and tenor of the person I'm showing them to. If you asked me this last week, it would be this set that I posted here: Craftsmanship At Its Finest - The Perfect Fusion of KB Wood and Quigley Steel I keep pulling them out of my safe and looking at them over and over again with my mouth forming a "W O W" every time I look at them.

But... since we are in the 1961-1980 thread, these two might be ones that I would pull out and show...

No work of art but a special for me due to the romance and significance.
Who knows where this revolver has been and what it has seen over the years! I have several cosmetic jewels in my collection but I still am attracted to a revolver like this one. And yes I have a factory letter from Colt indicating it was shipped to this company.

LOL, I can understand.

For me, it's more like "WOW, you paid how much?!?!?!".
(In response to the current Colt prices that aren't quite logical except to the small group buying them.)

The wow factor just isn't a part of my buying. Mainly because I'm an enthusiast, not a collector or even accumulator. I buy for duty use and if I don't have a use or need, I don't buy. Swear I'm the only guy on these forums like that.

So if I had to pick a WOW gun, I would probably just reach to my right hip and draw the gun below. No need to "bring it out" because it's never stored. My everyday carry is my wow gun.

There are some great guns shown here though, and they all deserve the WOW factor in their own way. What might be an old worn out gun to one person, could be the crown jewel of another's possessions. Not many people have the luxury of owning a "WOW" gun, let alone dozens.

I don't get too many people over to look at my collection and a lot of folks I know "don't appreciate my level of gun ownership" either. However, that said, I have one or two that have gotten positive reactions.

Arguably, one of my EDCs is a wow gun due to the customization.

Some others get "wows" if I show them:

Funny thing is, for average folks, this is the gun that has the most wow effect, and I know why - leftists! Anti-gunners and the media! So when non-gun folks see this it's "OMG!!"

It is cool but it's just another rifle...........

Even though revolvers are my personal favorite, I'd say the "wow" factor for me is with guns that others can't identify.

For that list I'd have .....

XP100 (very futuristic look)
Ruger Hawkeye (not really a revolver!)
Remington Nylon 11 with 24" barrel

Smile Wow gun

Well, not as hard to pick one as I thought. I've had a lot of interest in so many over the years, but this one always gets folks attention, a 1969 QSPR Tunnel Gun. Next to my 1956 pre-29 birthday gun shipped on my 6th birthday in 1956, to a home state of Texas gun dealer, the QSPR is my favorite.

I have a few that generate "Whatizit?"-type comments.

I'm reluctant to say "Do you want to see my Johnson?" for obvious reasons, but this one does draw some interest!

My bar for "wow" is set a bit lower than some of you gents. Holy cow there's been some beauties posted!

But for me, my "wows" are probably my 4" 29-2, 460v, and Winchester 70 Super Grade 338WM.

Beg pardon for my ****** pics

Another odd duck that made it's first range appearance here a week ago. Under 3,300 produced in the 1940's.
