Gun Show Find
At the Cody Wy gun show this weekend and had a fellow come through wanting to make a trade... So just had to do it. A really nice four inch M-66 no dash in the box with papers and cleaning rod no swab. It seems to have had little use. It is serialled at 4K120x. This one has sights that are both stainless. So I guess it must be a fairly early gun. When would this thing have been shipped? Oh at the end of the deal I have 375-400 bucks in it. It also had Pachmyers on it.... but the box said targets so when I get the olé gal cleaned up... I'll probably put s nice clean pair of them back on it. Got a set of them at the show yesterday for 20 bucks... but think I have a set of GA's in the desk.
Also turned down a chance to buy a pristine Colt series 70Gold Cup for 300 bucks and the 66 I had gotten. Like Colts but rather have the S&W.
Have to see what I can find at the Bozeman Mt show next weekend!!
Gotta add I met a member of this board over the weekend....and like all I have met on here a friendly and easy to talk with fellow Hi again Two Bit Cowboy!!

We find stainless sights on 66s made up to 1974. Only a 100 or so prototypes were made in 1970, production started in full in 1971.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll try to get it cleaned up and put respectable wood on it and take a picture. Why did so many of us put Pachmayrs on guns back in the day. I bought a really nice Blackhawk(357)on Friday with terrible rubber on it. Got the original stocks with it, though. It hardly looks fired? Paid 300 bucks for it... so I guess I did ok on both those guns

Howdy Skeet 028.
Nice to meet and talk with you on Saturday. Always good to put a face with the name and posts. And thanks for sharing the Custer story!
Great score on the 66 -- sure glad to hear you're going to replace those recycled tyres! Your 66, Terry's ~1958 Model 30 and another fellow's 28 were the show's highlights.
I ordered some bbq leather for my 940 and 547 from Von Ringler.
Hope to see you in Riverton next Memorial Day -- best show in the state.
Take care,

Re: production schedules for the 4K serial numbers. They were issued over a period of three years, 1972-74. In this instance, the SCSW 4th is correct (not always true in the K sequence).
1972 - 4K1-4K1627
1973 - 4K1628-4K54104
1974 - 4K54105-4K99999
Hence, your serial number (4K120x) was issued in 1972, not 1973. But keep in mind this is production schedule (issuance year), not the shipping date. Yours might have shipped in 1973.
As mentioned, the stainless rear sight on the Model 66 was still showing up in 1972. $300 was a great price!

Nice score. With all the guessing, the only way to tell the correct date it shipped is a letter. The range yours is in shows a 3 year spread.

Absolutely correct. The numbers I showed in Post #10 demonstrate the three year span Don is talking about. But as I pointed out there, that shows only the brackets for the numbers that were issued in a given year.
For shipping, you need a letter. Which is why I wrote:

Yours might have shipped in 1973

Two-Bit...Terry sold the M-30 on Sunday....for a good price I might add. That 28 back in the corner sure did look good. Too much for my blood though. There was a nice 4 inch M-13 back in that area. Looked almost unfired. And yes the Gold Cup was 300 plus the 66. And the fellow next to me(Terry) bought it. Reason I didn't buy it was it was too nice for me to shoot and I am a 1911 guy so I have a few that I don't shoot now. Vonn Ringler makes some decent leather. My wife went to that show with me 3 years ago and helped me on Saturday morning. Sold a Hollywood Senior Turret press..she collected the money and promptly went to Vonn and bought a holster for her new Ruger 45 Blackhawk convertible. And those things aren't inexpensive. She uses it here on the farm/ranch summer and winter. I let it slip that he makes purses yesterday and boy did her ears perk up...BTW ACORN K frame RB Magnas are not commonly seen around here. You did good
And I'll bet ol Terry would sell that Gold Cup for a 50 buck profit...he slyly offered it to me for that..I was kinda kicking myself for not buying it. He is not one to make a big profit on anythng... I think he likes the action

Reason: Another sly offering LOL

I figured he'd sell that little 30. Fairly nice one, and you just don't see that many. I tried my best to work some sort of trade on one of my Chiefs, but he said it was his wife's and she wanted it sold.
Yeah, I thought the 28 was a bit rich, too, and the 13 was a 4" so held no account for me.
I spoke with Von this afternoon and had to order a belt to go with the two holsters. I finally woke up and decided his natural colored leather wasn't going to look good on my black belt. Has t' match, right?
Cheers,
