Pawn shop pick up: Model 19-4 2.5" $350 OTD w/ NEW PICS
Found this in one of my regular pawn shops this morning. Couldn't have been out more than a couple weeks. These pics are straight from the shop without a wipe down, which it definitely needs. Ugly spots here and there, some of which scratched off with a fingernail, others, not so much. Seems mechanically sound. Tagged at $449, and when I asked the owner his best price, he said $350 OTD and "Merry Christmas."
I'll have the popsicle sticks, pre-1982 penny, CLP, WD-40, and bronze wool lined up this evening.

Funny how these finds occur.
I'm not in the market for any Model 19s but
noticed at my local pawn shop were four
blued Model 19s, all in excellent to good shape
with target triggers and target hammers.
And nestled nearby was a Model 66 with 2.5 inch
barrel in excellent shape.

I gotta strart frequenting a better class of pawn shops. In the DFW area you would have to wear a ski mask and carry a shotgun to get that deal.

It's it a Merry Christamas when you can take in an orphan like that and clean it up, and provide a good home. That's why it was priced so you could not refuse.

Model 19-4
My gosh, what a deal. You are one lucky dude. Congratulations. I bought one just like that only in nickel a couple of months and paid way more than you did.
Clean it up, and shoot the snot out of it.

$350 OTD?!? Yer KILLIN me!
I looked at one at the last two gun shows (same one) that the guy had marked at $595 and wouldn't budge below $550 for it.
And I seriously considered it....

Man, I thought that last weekend's nickel 19-4 2.5" for $425 was the deal of the year.

Well guys, I think this is about the best I'm going to be able to do with this piece, with a combination of WD-40, CLP, bronze wool, popsicle sticks, a 1973 penny, a touch of cold blue, and Ren Wax, plus a Pachmayr grip to make it a tribute to Joe Hallenbeck's Model 19 in The Last Boy Scout (although those may have been smooth not finger grooves--but this what I had on hand--and his had the red insert on the front sight, and was probably a -4 or -5, but I digress...).
A lot of comments on the price, and I just have to say it pays to have a friendly relationship with folks you deal with, both business and personal. The owner of 3 shops I frequent personally showed it and priced it, and I was expecting maybe $450 out the door ($450 being the marked price) certainly not $350 OTD. He'd also personally sold a 19-5 4" to me about a month ago for $450, in slightly less of a condition than this one, and I guess he appreciates repeat business, without all the hassles that sometimes accompany owning and running a pawn shop. I think this was the better deal of the two.
Thanks for everyone's input.

It's not often an owner will come down $100 just by asking for his best price. You lucked out. Wish the rest of us had your kind of luck.

I saw a 2.5" 19-3 in a shop in Longmont, CO on Tuesday. It had no rust, a light turn line, no box or original grips. $650.

It's for scraping off the tougher rust spots, but the penny has to be a real copper penny, not ones minted post-1981. Those old pennies are about 95% copper; the newer ones are basically copper plated zinc (someone can correct me on the details of that if need be).
I'd read about that trick on this forum and elsewhere, but this was the first time I'd tried it, and I have to say it can be quite effective. The edge of the penny can be used to scrape off the rust and leave a smooth or at least smoother spot without scratching the finish. It may leave a little copper residue but it wipes right off. I would go to the penny after trying first to just rub off the rust with cloth and oil, followed then by a wooden stick (I usually use a popsicle stick, but a harder wood would be better), then the penny.

Thief..... great score. Got one and highly recommend as carry gun. Being finished challenged is not a bad thing. If you ever have to use it the pain won't be so bad if LE seizes it.

One of the best cold blueing products I have ever found for touching up a rough smith revolver is some stuff called Blue wonder. Its three different chemicals you use and the gun has to be heated up but it will actually darken existing blueing that is thin or scratched and darken holster wear on the end of the barrel.

YOU DID A FANTASTIC JOB, TURNING CHICKEN MANURE INTO CHICKEN SALAD, Olivehead ! ! !
KNOWING WHAT THAT GUN LOOKED LIKE, AND HOW MUCH YOU PAID FOR IT, SHOULD GIVE YOU A GREAT SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT, AND PRIDE, EVERY TIME YOU PULL IT OUT......
MY PREFERENCE IS SMOOTH GRIPS ALSO. MASSAD AYOOB CLAIMS THAT FINGER GROOVE GRIPS ONLY FIT ABOUT 10% OF THE SHOOTING POPULATION. I AM NOT ONE OF THEM. I FAVOR PACHMAYR PRESENTATION GRIPS, WHEN I NEED RUBBER. I REALIZE THAT YOU USED WHAT YOU HAD ON HAND, AND THEY STILL LOOK GREAT---WHILE KEEPING THE COST DOWN.......

I love the penny trick. works great. I used to keep pre 1982 pennys for the compression/impression machines but now include cleaning rust.

The penny trick is a good and cheap technique. I will have to try it one day, because it seems the nice thickness of the penny would be suitable for scraping, and I imagine a nice sharp edge when cut in half.
The only reason I haven't tried a pre-'82 penny yet, is because I started out using about 4" long pieces of household electric wire core, filed into a chisel. I have 2 and they are really handy for multiple jobs that you don't want to hurt the finish like sticking into corners with a patch or even scraping carbon. However, they are slightly bendable and thin.
Whatever one uses, make sure it is practically pure copper.
FYI - those Big45 Frontier metal pads that are advertised as being safe against the finest bluing, yeah, if you use too much pressure they WILL scratch bluing, fine or otherwise. Ask me how I know. I will only use them in the bore now.
