ID Stocks
Can anyone tell me what kind of S&W these stocks came on, and the kind of wood they are made of? I bought them in a small gun store in Alaska in 1995. they are dated APR 14 xxxx? The only S&W that I own, that they fit, is a 629-3 Magna Classic 1-1000. Here are pictures of them. Thanks.

I give up. This is the fourth time that I have blundered around, "like a blind Dog in a Meat Market", trying to find information, about these stocks. I made mistakes in previous inquiries, then corrected them, asked poorly stated questions, and corrected that. Now that I, have made a "Donkey" of myself, I have decided, that I don't really need to know that information about them. Thanks anyway.

Chubbo the wood is Goncalo Alves.
The guns are many of the 3" round butt N frames both nickel and blued.
A nice vintage set picked up today

S&W Round butt N frame grips
Our member, Weatherby, answered the questions, I asked about a pair of round but, N frame grips, in post #106. The picture I posted, of my, 1991 629 MagnaClassic, was the MagnaClassic, with it's original "Combat Concalo Alves" Stocks. Now, I need to know the kind of wood, that S&W used to make the stocks, of a deeper red color, that I bought in Alaska in 1995. I have shown both pairs of stocks, the lighter colored pair on the bottom, are the pair that came on the MagnaClassic. Thanks.

Not sure of the age of these grips. Picked them up for $30 AU dollars at a local Gunshow. Am going to have a go at refinishing them myself.

Here is my nicest looking N frame targets. Came on the 8 3/8" 25-5 I cut to 5" and fitted with a recessed 45 colt cylinder made from a recessed 29 cylinder

Picked up some stocks yesterday. They are original finish N black washer Magnas. I am not a good judge when it comes to stock size. Bought them as K, for my 17. They were too big! So they went on my 28 no dash. The only I could have got them cheaper, was to get free. Cleaned them with beeswax cleaner and good to go. Bob

My newly acquired 25-5 has nice factory stocks. They're not hard on my eyes to look at and make the rest of the revolver, for me, a "Black Beauty."
S&W Model 25-5 "45 Target" in .45 Colt.
Thanks for looking at the stocks on my 25-5 "Black Beauty."

I switched to un-checkered S&W target stocks for my older 686. My newer 617 also sports un-checkered square butt target stocks. I hate black rubber, and checkering on beautiful wood.

One of today's projects was restoring this set of K-Frame smooth magna stocks. These arrived dipped in oil-based poly that had yellowed terribly, making the medallions appear gold in color and hiding the beautiful wood. They turned out nice.

Watching this thread I've noticed that several questions have been asked about the light colored, concalo Alves grips, or as some members called them "blond". My take on S&W's choice of wood, of light color to issue on their shiny revolvers, such as stainless steel, nickeled, or bright aluminum might be wrong, but, it seems to me that it's their choice most of the time, and It's most often, Concalo Alves. A dark wood, that had more contrast, would seem to me, to be a better choice, but, everyone has an opinion. Here is my 1977 Mod. 27-2 6" nickeled revolver, wearing it's original grips, the "blond" Concalo Alves grips, of S&W's choice.

Update ....... The original pics show a new to me set of N frame targets that I’d just purchased. They now reside on my 4” M28-2 and just feel damn good.
I just bought another M28-2 from 1968 with absolutely gorgeous diamond targets (I don’t know if original) in the 6” configuration. And I’m not gonna lie, I upped my max bid by $100 because of the stocks. And no buyer’s remorse.

I'm one of the (few possibly?) ones who happen to really like the lighter wood grains on the target stocks; especially if there's some dark mixed in somewhere, and it doesn't have to be symmetrical to be attractive to me!

I'll be honest, I find Colt wood grips to work better in the hand on the smaller guns....... :O So I'll add a pic.
But that's not to say the Smith's don't work.

It's kinda of amazing that, in my opinion, only John Culina and Keith Brown make grips as attractive (and often then some) as S&W old wood shop.
