The stunning beauty of vintage SW stocks
We’re all aware of the spectacular wood from Roper, Culina, and others, but I gotta say I’m really drawn to the natural look of the older walnut and GA stocks from S&W. I literally stole these N frame targets off EBay and after a little lovin, I could stare at them all evening. I wanna see some of your vintage FACTORY stocks please!

KKid, I'm totally in agreement with you. I also really love the look of the older targets. I like the exotic woods that we can get today too, but those tones from the walnut and Goncalo Alves can be quite special in a subdued, understated way.
Great work on yours. Pics are great also.
Wish I had better pics to share but these targets on my 19 are quite nice.

These aren't exactly "minty", because this gun gets used, but I like the smooth Goncalo Alves (I think) target grips on my Model 66-1...

I don't know about vintage, but I bought this one for the stocks and got lucky with it being a factory 4inch RB.

I'm lovin' all the big wood, but my favorites come from the small, dark side, ca. 1954.

These walnut non-relieved stocks came from a Model 1950 .45 target. I sold them some time ago to a forum member.
I love the "smoothie" targets from the football-relieved era. These are on my K-22s.
This Model 48 has another set of K-frame smoothies.
This old-timer has a pristine set of standards.
This Model 66 came from the factory with excellent smooth targets.
These Model 24-3s came with some nice standard N-frame targets.
These .45 Colt Model 25s have great stocks.
This Model 28-2 came factory-equipped with a beautiful set of Goncalo Alves target stocks.
This transitional .22 kit gun had very nice standard walnut stocks. Frame from the 1940s, but shipped in 1951.
This Model 317 had very nice Dymondwood stocks.
This .22 Model 34 from 1981 had very nice J-frame smoothies.
This Model 67-1 sports a very nice set of standard Magnas. It was shipped in 1978.
Dirty Harry would have liked these particular stocks.
This is my favorite set of N-frame "smoothies," mounted on a really cherry Model 27-2.
Well, there are more, but I don't have time to post all the S&W factory stocks that I have owned and admired over the years. Worth noting that exactly none of them are "modern!"
John

I have a few decent sets of original S&W grips. I apologize in advance for the poor photography.
1979 NC State Highway Patrol 50th Anniversary Commemorative, Model 29-2
Model 27, no dash with "Coke" grips.
1937 Registered Magnum, REG-2269
Not original to the gun (Pre-Model 27, 5 inch) but they have beautiful grain.
Again, not original to the gun, but contemporary to it. Model 66-1
Not original to the gun, but again, contemporary to it. Combat Magnum

I agree! Model 19-3 on the left, and Model 19-5 on the right.

This first one is unlikely S&W but I always thought they were delicious.
This is the same gun before it was customized:
This 19-3 has originals:
This is a vintage M-25 and a relatively recent M 27 Classic. They both have gorgeous wood (okay, I took the wood off the M25 and put elk on it but, still, I do have these stocks!):
Some snubbie Model 10s:
I have been advised these stocks are not original to this Model 10 .357 Magnum but they are S&W:
The wood on this Model 12 has a deep, rich color:
Snubbie 19-3
Snubbie Model 15:
Fun thread! Thanks!

Vintage factory?.......You bet......s/n 13030 (#30 of 1000 ever made).
Gorgeous?..........beats me, I like em, and I'm guessing another lucky moment that they stayed on the gun they were made for and issued with for some 117 years!
No chips, dings or appreciable wear, that was some super tree that the factory used in those days.
Think I should change em out for some post war K football targets so speed loader could be used?
Just joshin!

SFIDEC,
Those heavy frames are super cool. I have not seen factory grips with 2 screws before (I'm not really into the real oldies) but I'm wondering....does the lower screw go through a clearance hole in the frame, or is the frame designed such that the screw goes through plain old air before contacting the other panel?
Pics of the revolver without grips on???

I'm not the one you mentioned but the screw just go through air as you put it.

I MUST AGREE, clang444. THOSE SMOOTH TARGETS ARE GORGEOUS. I HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM IN PERSON, OR EVEN ON GUNS THAT I HAVE BID ON, ON GB........
ALL OF MY S&W REVOLVERS ARE STAINLESS ROUND BUTTS, THAT FIT IN THE CATEGORY, "FROM 1980 TO PRESENT". THE ALL CAME WITH EITHER SMOOTH, WOODEN COMBATS, OR RUBBER, FINGER GROOVES......
I DO HAVE TWO 8 3/8" BARRELED, NO-DASH, REVOLVERS. I BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE BOTH SQUARE BUTTS. THEY ARE A M617, AN A M686. BOTH HAVE THE ELONGATED, FINGER GROOVE, COMBATS.......
ON WHAT MODEL REVOLVERS, WERE THESE BEAUTIFULLY FIGURED, SMOOTH, TARGETS ISSUED ? ? ?

I quite agree and that is likely why I have sets of Culina smooth targets on a couple of my revolvers.

Sorry I can't tell you what guns they originally came off of. I bought most of them 15-20 years ago at various gun shows. I used to not be able to afford many of the guns I wanted, but I could afford the $20 or so for grips that I would find on tables. It gave me something to collect that fit my budget at the time.
Now I've got several drawers of grips that I'm looking for the right guns to put them on. Too bad they've become too expensive again. Here's what a couple of the drawers look like:

Thought I’d add these RB targets to the thread. I keep these on a 3” nickel M36.

S&W stocks
Great thread. Even the old "sharp shoulder diamond magnas" on my 1947 M&P are beautifully crafted
