28-2 4inch value
Hello guys and gals. I have a friend of mine that has a 28-2 4inch that I want to buy. I have one 28-2 that I traded for years ago the gun that got me really collecting smiths. This gun is a very clean 4in beautiful matte blue. The serial on the gun is N500xxx. I can try and post some pictures and it also has the target grips. Thanks

Depending on your location, I'd say $600 and up.

I would say here in AZ a friend to friend deal, face to face $500 maybe a little more. Even though it's a nice revolver they are quite common and available. I'm seeing a lot of widows around here selling off collections of older mint revolvers, so supply is plentiful. I have a model 27 already so I would have to get a good deal on a 28 to buy it.

Not possible to touch a good one at the LGS for under 650 where I am. If your friend takes 500, it would be a great deal. Yes they are out there but the 4'' are sought after and there are some collectors who grab them and pile them.

$699 was the asking price of the last one I saw. It was a 95% 'er.

There's one of that vintage at a LGS near me marked for $800 or so, but it's been there for awhile. I would think $600-$700 is more in line.

saw a 28-2 6 inch for $600 at a gunshow this weekend in 90 percent...
honest wear not abused... I would have started negotiations but it was across state lines and it would have cost more than I could haggle to get it home... so $550-$600 would be in the ball park for the 4" less if it is a good friend...

I don’t know when it comes to values. Is it buy low and sell high or buy low and sell low.? I paid $29k for my first house in ‘76, just ten years ago it was worth $300k. So most say the value would be around $35k right by s&w standards? Lol
I paid $695 for a s&w m28-0 / 6” ten years ago in excellent condition. The m28-2/6” was $795. I’d say at least $1.000.

I bought one last week for a very good price, a bit under what you are seeing, but I would have paid (was prepared to pay) $650 cash for it. It is a nice gun.

Just bought a 4" one in 98% condition for $550 with no grips on it and I'd been looking for a while and saw a lot of ragged ones go for more than that. If a gun has mint Target grips those will sell over a hundred bucks quick.

Others have given good advice on ballpark figures. I could not add anything more about price w/o seeing it, at least seeing pictures.
EXCEPT:
You may want to gently remind him that with a face-to-face transaction he will not have to pay commissions, FFL fees, shipping etc., not to mention avoiding possible headaches with pain in the rear whiney buyers. He may net more by selling it to you for $500 to $600 than if he sold it on GunBroker for $700, when all is said and done.

About a year ago I bought mine absolutely mint in excellent box with all the papers, etc. for $650.00 and feel fortunate that's all he was asking.

I bought one for $650 also a few months back, NIB unfired condition with matching box and papers/tools. Based on what they go for on GunBroke, I think I made a good deal.

Paid $500 for mine June 2016. Unfired except for factory. Came with mint factory magna grips and ex++ target grips box clean kit paper. These are beautiful guns.

Was hoping to find a 4" 28-2 at the gun show in Mesquite TX today to go along with the 6" NIB 28-2 I bought at Cabelas this week for $800. No dice, there wasn't a 28-2 at the show. I still ended up spending too damn much money though...because there WAS a NIB (presentation case) 6" 27-2 with tools and paperwork that's now mine and a like new (no box) 520. The 28-2 woulda been a hell of a lot cheaper I'm addicted and can't stop...other things keep flying out of my safe to pay for these dern revolvers..
