Default Pawn Shop Find- 65-1

Howdy

Really trying to cool it these last few months, having been on almost a 2-year buying binge. After having hand therapy for surgery this morning, I forced myself to visit a pawn shop where some nice pieces were found during the last 2 years.

This guy always has something "hiding" in the back that is not in his show case. He produced a nice 4" 686 and this 65-1.

Since I already have a nice 4" 686 and a 65-5 in 3", I zeroed in on the 4" 65-1 when I saw that it was early production and recessed chambers.

When I asked him to price it, he came back 5 minutes later with: "$450 out the door." I made a 15 minute round trip to my bank!!!

Serial is: D80162x which should place it about late 1975.

*NOTE in first photo there is a scratch with what appears to be a small corrosion spot next to the cylinder release.

**NOTE that it has a really nice set of rounded magnas.

Do I "need it?" Heck no............but one only lives once and I did not have a model 65 in 4-inch. AND........good older Smiths are really drying up around here. I figure all are better investments than passbook savings.

I also picked up a really clean Remington 550-1 with scope grooves and shell deflector.........and added it to the 5 other ones in the stash.

Life now has a lot of aches and pains, but it is still good!

Y'all take care, Bo

Bo, nice pick up at a good price to boot. I believe the magnas on your revolver are called "P.C." for plain clothes stocks. If that is correct they have somewhat of a collectors value themselves.

Take care of the hand.

That "scratch" looks like it is raised up and has a shadow under it .
It looks like a bristle from a brush to me ?

bigmoney............

Between lighting, camera position, and reflections, it is indeed a scratch, more like 2 or 3 shallow scratches side-by-side. Laying next to those and very close to the cylinder latch screw, you will see the little corrosion pit. The rest of the piece is darned nice, like 95% plus overall.

old bear..........do you live in NC?

*THANKS for the tip on PC (plain clothes) grips. I began picking up extra Smith grips years ago when they were cheap. At that time, I picked up a number of smooth presentations and combat finger groove........... I noted that the square butt version of magnas were easier to find than the rounded-off PC versions. I wish I could find 2 or 3 more pairs like these for the prices they commanded just a very few years ago.

Y'all are the best, Bo in western NC
