Md 14-2 Mystery Help
I have come across this very nice 14-2 with the following attached information. A gentleman here in my area is selling his collection.
He is in his late seventies and said this gun belonged to his uncle
who was a customer of Joe Hannan.
My questions are
1. Is there a record of this ?
2. How do you place a value on this.
3. What is the value ? ( IYO)
4. Would S&W do this for Customer's
I know I will think of more to ask, I want to thank you
in advance for any and all help.
Hope you enjoy this, You never know what you might find
and where it might be. This is a first for me.

Beautiful revolver and nice stocks. Having no idea who Joe Hannan is I will not be of any help with your questions.
Someone will be along soon to set you on the path of enlightenment.

The Standard Catalog mentions "Special order of 1040 with a 4" Heavy barrel on a square butt frame w/ Red Ramp front sight reported shipped to Dayton Police Supply serial number range K623337 to K624496." This seems to be one of those maybe?

I think that it's one of these, so valued as such.
Others here know better about the value of these Dayton 4 inchers.
Myself, I don't see a huge premium over a comparable condition Model 15,though the combat grips add a chunk of value.(if only for harvesting)

I don't think so but there a lot more knowledgeable people than me here who could confirm or deny that. If I understand correctly the TS in the 'stock' area on the box indicates that it shipped with target stocks. I don't think they started shipping with the combats until the '90's.

Aside from the red ramp front sight insert and the 1980s era factory Combat stocks, it looks to be one of the Hanen Specials as noted above. It is a desirable gun in this condition with the original box, but I think $2500 is quite optimistic for an asking price. Somewhere in the $1000-1500 range sounds about right.

The fact that it has non original, yet more valuable stocks, might hurt the value.

I sold one to a collector in Dayton a couple of years ago with full target, RR, W/O, but no box. The gun in 99% condition with the correct grips(those are not the correct grips, though worth $100-200 to some people) would most likely be worth anywhere from $850 to $1000(in my opinion). The correct box on that run of guns is hard to find, so I'd pay $1200 for that in 99% with the correct grips....maybe more. A nickel one sold for a lot more than that.
The correct grips can haggle away up to $200 sometimes when not there.
Your Combat grips might be worth "close" to what a set of proper grips would cost. The proper grips for this gun have been asking $225-275 here lately, but $200 is max for me....maybe more per the grips.
I do not own one with the correct box, so that makes a collector even more interested in that situation. Great find. Your serial number is low in the realm of those, so it may have been saved or kept aside, judging from the gun to have the box and tools.
Love your gun and box.
Must add something. I found over the past some of these guns may have been used in Dayton for law enforcement, or so I've heard. Think they were shipped to Dayton Police Supply, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wessons 3rd Edition. I think Mr. Hanen may have ordered a run of these to be sold in his store. Sure wish I would have known him then. Does anyone know if the guns were shipped to two locations or just one, the other being Dayton Gun Headquarters?
The one on the left had the diamond grips shown above, but I carried it a lot and changed the grips for carry. Note the white out rear sight. Sorry for the old picture, but there are a lot of new folk here. Sold one in full target configuration with W/O and RR.

MMMMM Combaaaaats - While not correct - I love them ! The gun and box are sweet as well. Will it grow in value ? I doubt they will get any cheaper.

SB Or RB combats have been regularly selling on eBay for $250-$400 with most in the 325-385 range. RB selling more toward higher end of range. Diamond grips generally $85-250 depending on condition and amount of bidders.

Listing with a seller on an auction site may get a higher price, but there is shipping to them if they are not close, and 15 to 20 percent fees for all the work they do so well. That would net you 800 or so if the item sells for 1000. That would be 1600 or so if the item sells for 2000. Hence, what it sells for might sound great. In actuality, it is what you receive that counts in your wallet.
The great part is they take many extraordinary pictures. They can help move something for you if you do not have the assets to do it.
A gun that sells there for 2 grand is only worth about 1600, yet they say "one sold at auction for 2000." Plus, you have to sit and watch it start slow. How does one really value something?
