Default A beater 64, may be my “favorite”!

I’ve posted pics of this M64 from the mid 70’s before. I picked it up a month or two ago to hopefully, be my “woods gun”.

However, I’m so freakin anal about keeping all of my guns in premo condition that I just didn’t know if this one would ever fit in my “collection”.

Well I’ve been shooting this thing ....... a lot! And I love it, we have a “connection”. I did put a set of old (black washer) magnas on it because I like the thicker profile than the originals (which I’ve put in the original box for storage). It finally clicked this afternoon, about 200 rounds in, that I love this gun! I have an old holster en route to hold it for those woods walks.

I’m at peace, I have a new friend.

Does not look too "beaterish" to me.

My thoughts as well. If this is a “beater”, I would love to see pristine version.

It just had some surface challenges, mechanically it’s perfect. I’ve given the finish some tlc just to make it a little more photogenic. Thing is growing on me.

I know what you mean. I have one of the surplus Australian M10s that Buds sold 3-4 years ago. The finish is worn but she still shoots! I carry the M10-8 out and about to the barn and on our property. It’s just perfect for a “working gun”.

If that's a "beater", mine is a "thrasher." Put them both on a scale, and mine will weigh less, probably from walking a beat and banging into a cruiser doorframe too often. But it's tight and accurate, and the trigger is incredibly crisp and light, single and double action. It's my favorite companion on fishing trips and woods walks, especially in bad weather.

In just the past two years I too have become a Model 64 aficionado. And everything you say about this marvelous gun I totally agree with. My first was a 4 inch no dash which is "almost" a safe queen, but not quite. I've shot it enough to know that it is accurate and reliable. But then a bit later came my Md. 64-2 with 2 inch barrel. Oh My! What a gun it is. Smoothest action of any revolver I own. I don't have scale to measure trigger pull but it is very light in DA and the SA is just perfect. I'm sure the same can be said about the equivalent Model 10s but the only one of those I have is a Detroit Police safe queen in nickel. If you don't have a Md 64 you should get one, beater or otherwise. I'm serious!

Here's one of my model 64 beaters. Police property id was on the backstrap. Sooo I felt the need to make it a round butt.

I bought a couple of police trades last year intending to give them to the kids as night stand guns. Of course, I had to take them apart, clean them and get some Wolf springs in them and then test fire them. Very good pointers and very accurate.

Somehow I have not gotten around to getting them to the kids...

Model 64's are great, especially the "Seasoned" ones...

This is my shabby Model 64, got it in 2006 at a hardware store for $235, it had rubber grips and a very scratched up sideplate where some determined yet untalented person had tried to get into it. Fortunately they did no harm to the internals, a gunsmith inspected it and blessed it as totally stock.

Like the OP, I went with some Magna's to replace the rubber grips.

It is without a doubt the most accurate handgun I have ever owned, period.

This is a double action group at 20 yards on a steel rabbit:

40 yards single action:

Today a police trade in Model 64 is not a lot more than the $235 I paid in 2006. A local police supply house has trade in Model 64's all the time, they are often on sale at $279....

I, too, love Model 64s. Yours looks very nice, actually. I really ADORE K frame snubbies but 4" K frames are quite yummy as well.

I'd mortgage my firstborn for a four-inch standard barrel 64. But she's married and I'm stone broke.

The 64 was the first revolver I was issued when I became a Police Officer. The agency (federal) turned them in a few years after I got there. Now we carry Beretta 92FS. A couple years after we switched I asked one of our sergeants about the 64s and why we could not buy them from the agency. He told me that was the government's way, just pick them up and get rid of them somewhere else. He also told me that the agency had done a microscopic exam and found many of them to have microscopic stress cracks in the frames. Some of those 64s had as many as 20,000 rounds through them according to the Sergeant. Still wish I could have bought mine though.

My last issued M64 was one of the .357 chambered predecessor guns to the M65 version. It was a confiscated gun and when I had to swap it for a G17 in ‘89, it went to the grinder. Darn shame.

Your hunt for, and intended role for the M64 sounds like my version of hunting down a 4" M65. It was to be a woods beater. Got a good deal on it, $280, IIRC.
Had a few specks on it, had obviously been a working gun. Cleaned up, put K targets on it.
Turned out it was a freak. Most basic, quality .38 and .357 ammo, it wanted to shoot like a rifle. Unusually accurate. Just a plain ol' service revolver. Strange.

After that discovery, it was hard to assign it the beater role. It still does some woods and hunting trips, but the beater role got put onto a Ruger Security Six 4" SS.

I have had my ex police 3” M64-3 beater for about 10 years or so. It was in the case at my old LGS with a half dozen other police trade ins, four 4” M65’s , a 3” M65 and a 4” M64. I picked up the 3” 64 because I had not seen many of those. I went back the next day to get the 3” M65 and they were all gone. I think I paid like $225 for it. It is one of me favorite shooting S&W’s!

I’ve been shooting mine the last couple of days with some targets that I just picked up from a forum member. Really like them on this gun, they may stay there!
