Default Nickel highway patrolman

I have found a nickel 28. Unsure of dash number but a pinned barrel. Has 357 ctg and Highway patrolman on barrel. I’ve only seen pictures. Unsure if it’s original nickel but the hammer and trigger are still case color. Looks like period grips. Maybe a dull or satin nickel. Any ballpark on a fair price? Local estate auction. I’ll look at it closer at auction day.

Those are extremely rare and I would require a factory letter before buying one.

If it's coming up at an estate auction I doubt you'll have time for a Jinks letter.

How rare is extremely rare? Under 1000? I’m sure there’s no factory letter on it but if it went for $500 to $600 wouldn’t that be a good price even for a re finished shooter? I’m just wondering. Thanks

Then without proper documentation I pass on it unless is was selling cheap meaning about the same as a blued version. That way if I won it I wouldn't be out much money and have a conversation piece.

If before the auction you asked to look under the grips for potential rust you could then discreetly look for the N stamp on the frame.

If I saw the stamp I would roll the dice on it but not go too overboard. If its done well at least you will enjoy it.

Personally, I would pay $500 for a functionally sound Model 28 shooter with a nice finish, regardless if it was original or not. You’ll be hard pressed to find a blue one in good condition for that price. Someone will come along and disagree, but most likely won’t be able to point to one for sale anywhere. I shouldn’t post when I’m sleepy, I tend to get a little cranky. Sorry,
Doug

Absolutley! N frame even if only in nice shooter grade priced at $500.00, I would snap up quickly without a second thought. Afterwards, if it actually turned out to be a true FSP nickel M28... Banner day!

Mine is not one of the special one's.
But I'm dam sure I would let it go for a mere $500-$600!

I have a pretty nice 4" S&W model 28 that was refinished in nickel and I really like it. I think S&W should have made nickel model 28 available as a regular production gun. There are almost a half dozen nickel model 28's up for sale on the GB auction site right now. Some are priced fair and one is especially way up there.

All my 28’s are 6” barrels. Two are 99.99% condition the other has some holster wear, it’s 97.99% easy.

Here is a thread that should be very helpful. It has a list of serial numbers for the Nickel Florida HPs. It also has a picture of what markings you should see on the butt frame. This should help distinguish between the real thing and just another refinish.

Legit Nickel Model 28

If you read some of the old threads on the nickel 28s I think you will find one where Doc44 says the ones he has seen did not have N stamps. I don't remember if he was talking about the Florida guns or the so called salesman samples.
I bought one in a local pawn shop several years ago for $365 and I would not sell it for twice that much now. I just really like the dang thing.

Contact sandspur6 - he collects FHP revolvers. I understand there were 25 of them made in 28-2.

FHP 28s all have 5” barrels and are very rare. I have a FHP 27 and a FHP 66, but the FHP 28s are extremely rare (less than 50). They are marked with “FHP” and a two digit number on the butt adjacent to the normal serial number.

Maybe the gun was hard chromed, explaining the satin finish. It was done to a lot of working guns years ago.

A hard chromed model 28 would be a great pack around shoot the heck out of with hot 357s gun, even if not original. 28s were actually made to shoot.

I don't know what the last one on the market sold for, but my guess is you could have said "ten times that much" and still been on the low side.

I should have been clearer. I bought a nickel M28-2, not one of THE nickel 28s.
