Question Question Model Number/Production Change and Serial Number Date Conflict

I could use some advice and help. I’m looking at a Model10-5 which according to the Model 10 and Production change 5 should have a date around 1962 but the Serial# 2D3XXXX suggests a date of 1977-1978.The revolver is blued with a 6” tapered pinned barrel, squared but. Caliber is S&W 38 spl. I got this information from SCOSW 4th Edition. How to reconcile the differences? What am I missing? The condition looks excellent so I wonder if the newer production date is more realistic. It doesn’t look to be refinished.

The Model 10-5 was introduced in 1962, but production continued until 1977. The -7 replaced it sometime that year. Your serial number was issued in 1977, so it fits within the timeframe for a 10-5.
