Wink HELP! 28-2 now pile of parts UPDATE and thanks

Guys 'n gals I need your help!

I bought a 28-2 sn S289xxx ('66-'67) and while at the range after it got hot brown stuff started running out of it.

Brought it home and after removing yoke and sideplate it became obvious that it needed Deeeep Cleaning.

After I took the mainspring out I removed the hammer and when I went after the trigger and hand the hand separated and the torsion spring landed on the bench.

The trigger has two through holes only and no pins and I know that that torsion spring goes in it somehow but it has me beat.

Does anybody have a photo of what this thing should look like reassembled? Or a concise description of reassembly?

There are some videos that show a lot, usually MIM or 3 pin triggers or anything but this.

If you can't help me figure this out it's back to S&W and I really don't want to do that unless absolutely necessary.

This fine revolvers fate is in limbo as a "box 'o parts" without your input.

Thanks in advance. JD

My system is simple: put all the parts in a bag.

Take bag and a six pack to my gunsmith.

Endure his laughter.

Return home with reassembled gun.

Thanks Rpg! I can be in Denver in about 40 hours if a wheel don't fall off or a horse get sick.

May just drink the beer and try it then.

Your trigger should have two holes and three pins. Sounds like someone replaced the original trigger with a new MIM trigger. The hand spring on a MIM trigger is held in by the hand. On the original trigger the hand spring was held in place with a pin. Have seen allot of people looking for hand springs for the new MIM triggers as they fall out during disassembly. In a MIM trigger the spring is stuck into a recess, you push it up with a small screw driver and insert the hand. Very much like on the old trigger but no pin to hold the spring in place. I have a MIM trigger sitting in front of me as I type but my photography skills and camera are very limited. I have uploaded photos of an original trigger & hand, MIM trigger & hand.

Thanks Mr. Oldk22

I think you are right. This trigger has a slot up the back and no pins. The hammer is case colored.

On a new tack we will see where the wind takes us.

Regards JD

You might see if there's a Youtube video about assembling the S&W revolver. I hear they are restricting some gun related videos but you could check.

PS: I did the same thing 30 years ago. I did eventually figure it out and now I can tear down a S&W and put it back together but the first time can be daunting.

Attached are some pictures from JB Wood Firearm Assy Revolvers Vol 2.

If you think these will help, send me an email or PM with your email and I’ll scan in the entire disassembly/reassembly instructions w/pics.

Damienph those are great photos but my problem was somebody along the line put a mim trigger in a 1966 M28-2. I don't think it was the correct torsion spring either. I am relatively familiar with that generation but had never even seen a mim trigger much less how to replace the hand torsion spring. Probably need a jig or at least another hand or two.

Gun leaving for S&W most riki tik (maybe) because I want it RIGHT. If it comes back mim then it looks like I'm shopping for forged parts.

Thanks to EVERYBODY for helping out!

Update on this thread this date

S&W customer service rep said that turnaround time for for non-warranty revolver repairs is now 90 days more or less.

Emailed me a FedEx label while still on the phone with me. Shipping today.

Will post as developments occur.

Where in Western NC are you? The gunsmith in Hendersonville, Mike Merker 698-8804, fixed me up when I had similar issues a couple years ago. I think turn around was 2 weeks and about $50.

Seconded. Rarely are we ever treated to a spectacle, as in this case, where practically everything the performer does is wrong.

Thanks SeaBee for the name, number and personal experience.

He seems to be about an hour and a half away (depending on just where in Henderson County) but six hours travel time (there and back x 2 beats 90 days all hollow) and what you paid then is right around what FedEx wants just to ship and turnaround time sounds waaaay better.

With nothing to lose I'll give him a call

Just one more reason I really like S&W guys; if they don't know themselves they usually know a guy who does!

Even more valuable, knowing what to do with that tool . . .

Reminds me of the old joke about the mechanic who fixed a particular problem by turning a screw a full turn, then gave the guy a bill for $102. When the customer complained and asked for an itemized bill, he got this: Turning screw: $2. Knowing which screw to turn and how much: $100 . . .

Well, I had to watch the video. I knew I was in trouble right off when I heard the term "foot pounds" used----and my teeth started to hurt.

But I figured it couldn't get any worse---and kept watching it.

I was wrong---it got worse.

Then I wondered how many of us old farts are left who know how to properly hold/close a six chamber cylinder. Then I remembered Larry Gaertner, who would get visibly angry, SNATCH his gun out of your hands, and ORDER you to leave his table if/when you did it incorrectly. Anyone who endured that lesson did not soon forget---thank God for small favors!!

One moral of this tale is Bubba is alive---and walks among us.

Years ago I took my 629 no dash apart for a very much needed deep cleaning. The parts came out immaculately clean, the inside nooks and crannies were immaculate also. Then came the realization that they come apart a lot easier than they go together. I brought the revolver to the Armorer at the NYPD range, he assembled it before my eyes with little more than a screwdriver and a big grin on his face.

This is an MIM trigger (I think), I believe it's a photo on the inside of my 696, but it wasn't marked as such in my phone, so I could be wrong. Hope it helps you some.

Sounds like what I call a Cold Winter's Night/Icy, Snowy, Stay at Home or Miserable Rainy Day project. I am working on my 1953 Combat Masterpiece, think it needs a pawl. My gun videos are still on my Favorites List on YouTube, found a good one on disassembling/reassembling the Model 10.
My Iron Rules:
1. Gather as many references as you can-NRA, J.B. Wood, Kuhnhausen, etc.
2. Read them.
3. Read them again.
4. Repeat Rules 2 and 3 until you have MEMORIZED them.
5. Find the various videos and watch THEM until you have memorized THEM.

What makes you think that's an mim trigger? That looks to be a 696 no dash, which would have come with a forged hammer and trigger. The hammer shown is definitely forged, and the trigger looks to have a solid back with real case coloring.

Default Project update

Dragging out old thread for an update.

Thanks to everybody who tried to help with photos and narrative. I really appreciate your time.

Special thanks to the vote of confidence from Tex1001 upon which I found courage and ordered a forged trigger with spring and rebound spring guide. It dropped in with the hand that came in the gun. No range time yet but it times good and seems solid.

And WNC Seabee I's thankful too for the info on Merker's in H'ville. It's on the fridge with the SO and FD numbers.

Regards JD

I have learned that in some circumstances, far more than I would have thought 30 years ago, the best tool is a checkbook. Yes, that was a lesson learned in a slow and painful manner.

There were 3 most common things that can happen to S&W revolvers that were brought to me to remedy.
1. Hand torsion spring off the pin on the trigger
2. Replace trigger rebound spring
3. An officer with his first adjustable sight revolver who turn the elevation screw until the rear sight was at it's upper limit then tried to lower without holding the rear sight down. The threads on the elevation nut/base are very small and do not hold up when trying to lower the rear sight with out down pressure.
