Default 1978 M28-2, Round Butted and Bead Blast Blued

Found this mechanically 100% but cosmetically challenged Model 28-2 Highway Partrolman on a local forum. Had a LOT of surface freckling, worst on the backstrap area. So, had it round butted and bead blast blued. Would not normally refinish a classic but this was too far gone. They did a nice job on the finish. Was not trying to match factory finish but it looks a bit like some of the darker 28s.

Probably going to put some plain finish wood bantam or DX Classic combats on there.

What are the grips that are on it? For rubber grips they have an interesting shape to them.

They are Byron's by Vintage Industries. It's one of my favorite bantam grips, particularly on K Frames. The grip is small, very compact, and my small finger wraps perfectly around the bottom. You can find them on eBay and the like.

Nice work. I am a big fan of the 28’s, bought my first on in 74. It has been my companion many times on outdoor adventures over the years. First deer I harvested with a handgun was my M-28 with my handloads of a 160 SWC over 13.5 @ 2400. You have enhanced a work horse with a durable finish. Now go forth and shoot it......a lot.

Woody has worked on quite a few of my guns over the years.

I highly recommend him if you live in this area.

I'm generally not a fan of modified guns, but I certainly understand why you did it. IMO, it looks great, and I'd be happy to own it. Wood stocks will make even better. Enjoy it!

Swapped out the Byron’s grips for Pachmayr Compac with a S&W logo. Seems like a better fit.

Like sodacan above, I’m usually not a fan of modified revolvers, but now and then one of these old warhorses deserves a new lease on life. You’ve done this one justice. I carried a 28 on duty for many years. I don’t own or shoot magnums anymore but if I did, it would be a Highway Patrolman. Good shootin’,
Doug

Good call on the 28. I prefer wood for the grip, but that old warhorse looks great. Owned and carried a couple 28s as a cop, 357s were comfortable in the 28s and accurate.
One of the earlier Posters said nice "28 Mountain Gun" and I think he nailed it. Might want to see if the old Keith 173 gr solid will cycle in that beast. If so that load is superaccurate and shoots through buildings. Don't ask me how I know!

Nice knowing that 28 is right here in NC!

Did you have the round-butt conversion to K or N frame specs?

Thank you Sir!
