Need some expert opinion on stocks.
My M58 serial S259872 shipped April 22, 1968. According to the letter it was shipped with walnut PC stocks. I was a little surprised to see the "PC" in the letter because I think S&W calls them "Modified Magnas" but whatever. No mention is made if they were the earlier "Diamond" style stocks or the later style with no pattern around the screw.
I think the stock style changed in 1968. Can anyone tell me which style was most likely installed on this revolver? I figure somebody around here must have some info on the date or the serial number at which the change occurred.
Thanks for your help.
PS: It shipped to Jesse Harp Co. in Tampa, FL. Anyone know about this outfit?

Doc44 mentioned that Diamond's were eliminated on N frame Magna stocks near serial # S270,000. I made a note of it in my SCSW. I don't know if that includes the PC version.
I sold a set to a forum member a few years ago and saved the photos. The serial # appears to be S258482.
Good luck with your quest!

OK, pretty sure this 58 most likely came the D MMs. So, I take it they are not just standard Magnas with the base rounded off? I have never held a set of these so I don't know. Is the checkering up higher from the base than standard Magnas?

Maybe adding confusion to the question. Posted pictures below of K Frame Magnas & K Frame PC Magnas on the left. The checkering on the K Frame PCs from the non-diamond era is smaller in area that the K Frame Magnas of the same period. Measuring across the screw from groove to groove the Magnas are 2 1/8 inch and the PCs are just under 2 inches. The stocks on the right are Diamond N Frame Magnas Serial Number 234999 and they look to have the same checkering area or very close but a little larger than the N Frame PC Magnas in the above post. Measuring from the top groove to the bottom groove with a set a calipers across the screw hole they measure 2 1/8 inch. I would guess the N Frame PCs will measure 2 inches. I do not have a set of N Frame PCs to compare them to.

I don't know how they produced PC stocks, but they obviously did more than just round off the bottom.
Here's a photo of the bottom of the N diamond PC's I sold:
I don't have N Magna's to compare, but I do have both styles of K frame. The bottom of the checkering is substantially higher up, but they routed a much wider border at the bottom. It appears that bottom was rounded before the stocks were checkered, since the area below the border of the PC's is higher than the bottom of the checkering on the standard Magna's.

Wow!
Great info and pictures guys. Showing my S&W newbie side by saying I've never heard from the PC version of those stocks.

Here's an N serial numbered Model 58 with the non-diamond "PC Magna" grips.
