Welcome! It's an uncommon gun, only 2,768 were reported made. N frame, .45 ACP, 6.5" barrel, Target sights.

The standard 1950 .45 Target had a tapered barrel; a few later heavy barrel 1955 Targets were mis-stamped with the 1950 barrel markings.

We like photos! Hope this is helpful.

More data would help.

Military or Target?
3, 4, or 5 Screw?
Serial number range?

Model numbers began ca. 1957-58.

Mine was a M-1950 Target. I sold it because accuracy with .45 Auto-Rim ammo was pretty bad, and I didn't want to fool with half moon clips and .45 ACP ammo.

If you hand-load and use hard - cast SWC bullets, I suspect it'll shoot well. I think I'd load it to give a 250 grain SWC (Keith) bullet about 900 FPS. Keep in mind that the rifling is designed for jacketed bullets.

The gun is as big and almost as heavy as a .44 Magnum, and I think I traded it in on a Model 29. That was certainly in that time frame. The M-29, with 6.5-inch barrel, shot phenomenally well.

Hang in there and keep trying to post those pictures. By the serial number, it sounds like you have a 1950 Target, also known as a pre model 26. It should have a 6 1/2 inch tapered barrel and 4 screws in the side plate (one may be under the grip) and another screw in front of the trigger guard. Not many were made and they are a scarce revolver that was designed to shoot jacketed ball ammo. Welcome aboard.

If a pre 26 it should look a lot like this one. Eager to see pictures.

1950 .45 Army, that became the Model 22 in 1957. Original stocks were checkered, diamond Magnas. S&W discontinued this model in 1966.
