Smile Well-Carried Chiefs Special - Interesting Engraving

As many of you know, I love engraved S&Ws! And like all of my engraved guns, the number one requirement is that they "speak" to me. This one "speaks" to me different than my other guns in that the "engraving" is all lettering. Here she is and along with her, my question to you - What does "P.D.C.N." stand for?

I typed "PDCN" in the internet hoping for an answer and this is what I got...

Acronym Definition
PDCN Parallel and Distributed Computing and Networks
PDCN Physical Disability Council of NSW (New South Wales, Australia)
PDCN Physical Disability Council of New South Wales (also seen as PDCNSW; Australia)
PDCN Professional Development Centre, Northern Areas (est. 1999; Pakistan)
PDCN Patada de Chuck Norris (Spanish: Chuck Norris Kick)
PDCN Phone-Dependent Cepstral Normalization (algorithm)

... so, I'm sending it out to you guys for some help - any ideas?

Thanks,

... now that my fellow Arizonan answered the question in less than 2 minutes (thank you very much) , it makes me question my internet searching skills... Do any of the rest of you have any PDCN engraved guns? Seeing as it is such a huge department (over 2,000 officers)... Or even better yet, are there any PDCN LEOs out there on the forum?

Nassau County is the pd that basically covers the Western half of the Island (other than local city, town and village pd's). I'm with Suffolk, which covers the Eastern half, again including local associated agencies.
Nassau PD years ago commissioned S&W for a commemorative handgun, as seen here: Nassau County PD Commemorative Model 66

While PDCN.org (Nassau County, NY) is the most likely, there is one other possibility I found. Police Department of Colts Neck (township), Monmouth County, New Jersey. (corrected, thank you)

Richard, thanks for sharing that with us. Neat PD award revolver.

My Department used to do what I envision that this PD did for our award revolvers. Armorer just removed the side plate and took it to one of the kiosks at the Mall like "Things Remembered", and gave them the message to be inscribed. Inexpensive, and no worries about leaving a firearm with someone who might do something dumb. Local jewelry stores usually had the equipment to do this as well.

Not exactly like your professional relationship with Mr. Quigley, but it was quick and easy and inexpensive.

Just guessing but the work sure looks like the pantograph style, and it's on the sideplate.

Surely a great PD collectable, though.

Best Regards, Lea

Dan, if you follow the link that eb07 gave above, you'll see that they call themselves pdcn on the web address. That should lend some credence to the theory that pdcn is a common way that they refer to themselves. Of course that is still speculation, but I think there is a pretty good chance he hit on the correct soulotion.

Best Regards, Les

From personal knowledge, although the Suffolk County NY Police Department is commonly referred to as SCPD, the Nassau County NY Police Department is often referred to as PDCN...

Colts Neck did not have a PD in 1972. Covered by NJSP at that time.

I've been researching for 25 years what C.T.D. represents, machine stamped, on a pre-39 shipped to Jesse Harpe (S&W distributor), Tampa, FL in 1955, without success.

All:

The above is why I love this forum Lots of good discussion, sound thoughts and helpful ideas. Thanks a ton, I've learned a lot.

Les:

You articulated well my thoughts on the engraving. Very neatly done, and most likely done with a mechanical engraving machine. Some friends of mine used to take one of those to the finish line of some of the marathons/half marathons and engrave the race times on the finisher medals...

Ahem ... I'm surprised nobody has said it yet, but letter the darned thing! You'll never know for sure otherwise. Of course there is a chance it went to a large distributor, leaving you where you were before, but that's a risk I'd take on a gun as unusually marked as yours.

I have an M&P, unmarked, that likely went to Nassau County PD. It lettered as shipped to "Mineola Police Department" in 1947, which however hadn't existed since about 1928, getting absorbed by Nassau County PD. Rather peculiar.

I love this forum! You guys always come up with some interesting and generaly unusual facts and yes even some speculation but even the speculation generaly has merit about these type of guns . This is one of those that makes you feel like you sure would like to sit and drink a cup of coffee with the man it was presented to and hear his story.

Garden City is the next village/hamlet and is just south of Mineola... Mineola is sort of the hub of Nassau, with all of the courts and county offices in close proximity...

I sent a PM to the OP, as I have the ability to contact someone in the Nassau PD in an attempt to check on the providence and history of the Model 36...

I taught firearms at a couple of different LE academies for almost 40 years. In the early days, before it became difficult to give a gun away, the firearms staff would purchase and give a 2" J frame to the recruit that came out on top in the firearms portion of the academy program. We had it engraved similarly. There must be a couple of dozen of them out there. I'm still in touch with a couple of those "Topgun" recruits, many of which have retired after surviving a 30 year carreer. They still have their J frames and all have indicated that they will be passed on to their offspring. I love guns with family history. ****---writing this makes me feel very old.
