Default 36 no dash....question

I picked up a model 36 no dash, today. Square butt, serial #6174xx. I pulled the grips and they are numbered to the gun, but I noticed one thing I’ve never seen before....Both grips have a clearly stamped USQ on them.

Anyone have any info on this?

More info on pistol (I don’t have pics)....Ramped serrated front sight, normal (not round) trigger guard, not a flat latch, and no diamond on the grips. Info I have puts it around 1969, but I am curious about the USQ stamp on inside both grip panels.

Any info is much appreciated. Thanks!

Probably 1968 for production. It could have shipped later, of course. Get a letter if you have to know, but I would spend the money on ammo if it were mine.

I have no idea what USQ means. Sorry!

Probably won’t have it lettered, and I’ve got plenty of ammo to run through it...Lol

I'd guess spring '68 for a ship date.

USQ: no idea, sorry.

Well, then! Save the money toward your next Smith & Wesson! And don't tell me there won't be another one.

I don't buy .38 Special ammo either. I have a perfectly good factory for it set up just to the right of where I'm standing at this moment. Four trays of brass already sized.

I just bought a 37 from the same manufacturing period and noticed the same
USQ stamping. I'm also very curious as to the meaning.

Maybe it stands for J (instead of U), square butt?

I have no specific knowledge, but that has never stopped me

I once asked Roy Jinks about a different letter stamping on some revolvers of another time period, and he couldn‘t help me but said that the various foremen and parts of the shop had their own internal codes that came and went and were never catalogued, known only to the people who needed them. If nobody pipes up with a better explanation, that‘s likely it.
