I think as long as lead and gunpowder are fodder for firearms, quality revolvers will always have a following. Market prices go up and down depending on scarcity, desirability, usefulness and current politics. History has shown a clear trajectory of higher values for most quality firearms as time passes.

I am a photographer and collected vintage cameras back in the '80's. They were scarce, desirable and could still be used with modern film with excellent results. I thought this was a great "investment", until everything went digital. The camera values plummeted. I was lucky to get a fraction of what I had invested.

If traditional "bullets" are replaced with something different and firearms are re-designed to fire lasers or a different type of projectile, I am confident the diminished "usefulness" will greatly reduce desirability. At that point only antique collectors will be interested in our old wheel guns.

That could be 100 years or maybe just 10 years down the road.

There are no sure investments that are guaranteed to increase forever. That's why I make sure to buy what I like and have a use for it rather than just an object that may or may not be worth more than I paid for it in the future.

I'm probably kidding myself (and my wife) that my small assortment of handguns is any kind of investment. However, there is something very satisfying to me in buying a perfectly functional, half century old machine made by American craftspeople, for about the cost of routine periodic maintenance on my disposable car. And knowing it will continue to be serviceable virtually forever.

Selling for a profit depend on what you have for sale. Watches..? Tools..? all good, just need to know what you're doing..

Most LGS i go in have about 30 semis mostly of the plastic variety for every revolver (new/ used/classic) they have.

This is getting like the collector car guys. The prices of the muscle car era vechicles will go down significantly when people like me that are interested in them are on the wrong side of the grass looking up!

Well you hang in there then!

My savings and pension fund my retirement. I couldn’t likely live one year as I live now if I sold all my guns.

I don't really look at my guns as investments. I'm sure I won't loose money on anything non plastic. I buy working guns. For me, this is a hobby that serves a purpose. Keeps me happy, and provides an avenue for me to spend time with my son who, after exposing him to several platforms, flat out loves revolvers and lever actions. I have a hobby involving mechanical art, spend time with family, and learn/teach a valuable skill. That's enough of a return on investment for me. If my kid makes some $$ when I'm in the ground, even better. I will say at work, I always try and get the young newbies to try a revolver. It's a tangible link to the good ole days when times were more simple. I'm 41. My kid is 12. The customer base may shrink, but I'm doing what I can to expand it. Now hummels and precious moments figurines? Those collectors will have issues

A word of advice, from an "Old Poop", I wouldn't waste, a lot of your time, sitting around waiting, for those outstanding collections of "gun art" to loose value. That would be akin to sitting around waiting for Norman Rockwell's art, to loose value, because it's too graphic, or to wait for Mark Twain's great writings, to loose their meaning, because they are based on the true nature of the human race. Just because most of the "spoiled" younger generation of our society has no, regard, or taste, for true art, does not mean that true art does not exist. I believe, that those "Plastic Shooters" that you mention, and their pitiful contributions to our society, will long be forgotten before "True Art". Just my 2˘ worth.

I have been buying/collecting guns for about 40 years. I have revolvers that are worth 3 or 4 times what I paid for them back then. I have no doubt that if I ever sell them that I will make a good profit.
The problem is will there be any buyers? Recently, I was in need of some quick cash. I offered up several guns for sale locally. I couple of semi-autos sold fairly quickly. However, the revolvers I offered up didn't even get a bite even though I had them listed at very fair prices.
The whole gun market is down right now. And as mentioned earlier, tastes have changed. I have no doubt that I can get fair market value on any of my revolvers. The question is how long will I have to wait for the right buyer?

Last year I was tasked with selling off the collection of a dear friend who passed. His wife just didn't want to fool with it and did want them gone. Fortunately he keep good records and I knew what he had paid for most of them. I sold everything at a profit, but to do so quickly, I sold everything below its current market value. In some cases well below. I have no doubt that if I had tried to get top dollar for them that I would still have most of the collection left.

So there lies the rub. While you can sell at a profit. It may not be as much as you hoped for or even current market value. Guns as an investment are not a sure thing.

I don't buy guns as an investment. I buy them to shoot and enjoy. That being said I have always done quite well when I wanted to move one or several along to finance another gun purchase. I have never lost money on a gun, of course I try to buy right and generally will keep a gun 10-15 years before I get bored with it.
I'm having a '51 Ford PU restored at the moment. I'll be lucky if I break even on it in my lifetime. But, I'll drive it and enjoy it, just like my guns.
