I have a chance to buy a S&W 18-2 with a 4" barrel. It's in excellent shape, though it needs a thorough cleaning inside and out. It has matching SN magna grips. No dings or blems that I can see anywhere. No box. SN is K4991XX. What do you think the going rate should be? Also, when do you think it was made?

I think anything under $800 is a good buy. There have been some going over the $1000 mark.

Sn comes back to 1962 if that helps with perspective.

Check the rear of the cylinder for peening.

Right now four -2s on Gunbroker @ $649 650 699 999

I'd have seven one hundred dollar bills on me and see if he would go for that.

I agree as a steady shopper on GB who has bookmarked many in the past few months to see them go out of reach for me at $700-$800 in the condition you are speaking of and if a box and papers are part of the deal
I would be looking more towards a $1000. I finally scored one that had just been listed with a "buy it now" for $489, not sure how the seller arrived at his price but I jumped on it. Nice 90-95% shooter with no box or papers. I'm glad I was forced to wait and will be picking it up today.
