Model 28-2, 5 inch barrel

I like the 5 inch barrels on S&W's and wish they would have made them a standard length. I decided to have Dave Chicoine take my 6" model 28-2 barrel and cut it down to 5 inches, using the original front sight, and installing a red insert into it. I received some photos of the cut down barrel from him today, and all that needs to be done is for him to cast the insert.

I will post photos of the gun when I get the barrel back and install it, but for now here are photos of the barrel.

Meh, there's plenty of 28-2's floating around, so it doesn't matter.

Just as soon as I have the extra funds, I intend to purchase a second 6 inch 28-2 and send the pair to Dave for the same treatment.

Did you send the whole gun or just the barrel?

I think it would be cheaper to just buy a 5" M27, no? That would also give you a deluxe, top of the line revolver rather than a rebuilt economy model with WAY too much invested in it.

But that's just me.

Whack away on that 6" 28, they were the bottom of the bbl at S&W anyway. Whoever said that the 5" 28 should have been standardized was more than correct. Nice set up on that 28. Good balance and easy to carry including wearing a holster in a car.

Cheaper? Maybe, but I don't think I have that much invested in it, I already have a 5" Model 27, and It's my money, so I'll do with it as I please.

a 28-2, cut to 5", with action job, and conversion to 45acp by Hamilton Bowen, 45lc cylinder added by me. 28's are great for tinkerin'.




15 yds with 45acp

15 yards with my 45lc cylinder POI shifted 3" left but the group tightened up. 4 of these 5 rounds can be covered with a quarter, all with a silver dollar. Pretty sure the flyer was my fault. So were the 4.

There were approx. 450 Model 29's made with a 5 inch barrel and are highly sought after.

Not really. I just thought it would be neat to have a 5 inch 28, as I like that length. My original plan was to have a 4", 5", and a 6" Model 28's, but I decided that the 4" and 5" will be enough. Another reason, is that I have not shot the Model 27 since obtaining it, due to its condition, and I certainly won't be afraid to shoot the 28.

Well, when you say you have a 27 but won't shoot it you lose me. I see no point in leaving a gun in pristine condition locked in the safe. Apparently that brings joy to some but not to me. I shoot my guns. Anyone who wants my guns when I'm dead will be getting them in well used condition.

And for the record, I dont know why some people have to pick and prod at other's ideas/actions/decisions. Yes, you could get a shooter grade 5" 27 (if you could find one), or simply shoot the mint one you have at home, but YOU decided to keep your 27 unfired and to have some fun and do a project; making a 5" Highway Patrolman. It was YOUR idea. That's fine by me, I dont know why other's are bothered by someone elses decisions.

Because some people are so miserable in their own skin, they need to try to make anyone else unhappy too. They can't STAND anyone having FUN, doing what THEY want with THEIR money.

I guess the SOME PEOPLE would pee pee on MY parade too for the model 28 I had made 44 Mag and Blued the whole gun.

I'm not sweating the less than agreeable reaction to my project. After all, it is Saxon Pig, whom I regard as one of the Forum's curmudgeons. No harm, no foul.

I explained my reasons for the project and I'm glad to see that others do the same with their guns too. We all travel different roads to get somewhere.

A french smith is building for me a model "520-like" from a classic model 22 of 1917 (new edition) and model 27 barrel and cylinder. The 6" barrel will be cut at 5". Is it a sin ?

The barrel (5,5") and the cylinder of this model 22 will be installed on my classic model 21 (.44 special), as I wouldn't own a .45 acp revolver any longer (I own 2 models 29 and a 1950 Target, so I still can shoot the .44 special round)...

I must be half off my rocker cause I gave Andy Horvath a 17-2 and will get back a .32 long. I also had the barrel cut ( DRUM ROLL NEEDED) to 5" with a Weigand interchangable front sight base. Hmmm. Keith's exhibition English walnut Roper grips are waiting for the gun. I'm so excited that I'm afraid I'll wet my pants when it all comes together. It won't be necessary to hire any security Larry. I've decided that if Keith wants to carry the gun around the show, or even take it outside into the sunshine, he can do so. It's the least I can do for him since he has made all those awesome grips for me.

Nice gun bg. You did well with the new 5'' and l personally like the length. l missed 5'' MOD 27 barrel on a net auction recently that sold dirt cheap. Putting a 5'' 27 barrel on a 28 could possibly bring on charges of Heresy and burning at the stake tho

The project cost me under $300.00, not including the gun itself. It's what I wanted, so the cost to have the barrel done is irrelevant to me. Since I removed the barrel from the gun and re-installed it, cost for that was only my time.

A very nicely done project. The 5 inch barrel is just about the perfect balance of sight radius and velocity Vs. handling and ease of carry. I have 4 and 6 inch 28's and a high shooter grade 5 inch 27. The 5 inch 27 is the best handling of the bunch.

There are enough 6 inch M28-2's still out there, altering one shouldn't cause a disturbance in the Force. Well, I think if he'd put a Pitcatinny rail on it, pink Cerrocoat and a set of the old camo Pachmayer rubbers, there would be issues with the force!(Man, I just made myself sick with that image!)

The 5" guns without the full underlug do balance very nicely...especially the tapered ones. A Pre-24 5" with factory letter just sold on GunBroker for $5600 two days ago... I knew a couple of officers with Dallas PD who carried 5" 29s.

Always wanted a 5" 57 and last year had a retired local smith who trained at S&W cut down a damaged 1964 to match my 4" and 6" 1964s...he did a nice job on the end of barrel radius so it looks factory.





Nice job on the 28...

...and of course if S&W had made their guns in 3", 5" and 7.5" we would all be asking for 4s and 6s....human nature....
