Default S&W 29-3 6inch

Just picked up a 29-3 6inch barrel but it measures shorter than 6 inches. Any care to weigh in on this? Thanks

Are you measuring from the outside of the frame, the inside or from the forcing cone?

The barrel length is measured from the end of the cylinder to the end of the barrel.

How are you measuring the barrel length and just how long is it?

Some barrels were cut to 5.7/8th doing the crown and breech end. Most were cut to a true 6 inch.

S&W barrel lengths are "nominal". The most accurate to the nominal length and the 1 7/8" I/J Frame and 2" K Frame guns. Actually from quite a few I have measured 5 7/8" is quite common, only rarely do you see anything longer than the nominal length.

Several years ago I had a 6" Model 27 that measured 5 3/4", but that is the shortest I have seen!

Congratulations on the 29-3! I picked up 1 on G.B. in November. It is the 1st .44, I have owned & shot. Glad I hand load. Picked up a 4" -2 nickel at April gun show. Now I need another .45 Smith revolver. Bob
Pictures of your 29, would be nice for us to see!

Hi all. I have the same kind of question. I have a Pre model 29 5 screw and form the end of the cylinder it measures 5 3/8". So did they make a 5 1/2" or 5"? I have 2 other 29's and the barrels are definitely nominal. 8 5/16" and 6 7/16"

My Model 25-5 barrel length is 5 13/16" measured from the face of the cylinder. My 17-4 is 5 7/8", and my 19-3 is 5 7/8".

Learned something new!

S&W Model 25-5 in 45 Colt.

Thanks for prompting me to measure my barrels.

God bless,
Birdgun
