M-19 (new and old) Hypothetical barrel question
As most of you have probably already heard, at long last, S&W has just rereleased the M-19 Combat Magnum a few days ago.
I know it's has a slightly taller frame, is not pinned and recessed, has a snap in place lock on the crane for extra security and has the Hillary hole as well as a internal firing pin. BUT, it is still a M-19
Since it is designated a M-19 and since S&W still does repairs on used guns going way back:
If I had a used M-19 (let's just say a M-19-4) and the "cracked force cone" happened to me, would I be able to send it to S&W and they be able to replace the barrel? (maybe with the current barrel?)

I doubt that it is even possible to modify the old K-frame for the new, two piece barrel.

Why would you want to use a two piece barrel in your older 19?
If I had a barrel problem in one of my 19s,
I want a replacement barrel just like the original.

Yeah, looking at them they do look kind of ugly (don't really know why S&W went that way with their classics). But I guess I was thinking the new design might help in terms of durability (if that's even possible as I would think that they would still have to cut the bottom of the cone in order to make room for the crane on older K frames).

Does S&W still make original barrels?

S&W doesn't make the original barrels anymore and doesn't have any NOS either.
The original barrels are getting harder and harder to find and therefore more an more expensive when you do. They are almost unobtanium.
I'm sure that is why the OP is asking about the idea of using one of the new barrels on an old 19...

Yes it is. (But not because I have a broken M19). My next gun is going to be a M19. I just want to see how the propects are of having it repaired if something were to happen to the force cone

I have a pre lock 627 with MIM hammer. Smith does not an original one anymore, just ones with the lock cutout!
So much for find parts for guns made before 2000!

The more practical way to get the hypothetical Model 19 running again without the correct barrel would be to install a one piece Model 14 or 15 barrel. I nave seen a Model 19 with an old skinny Model 15 barrel installed and another with a Model586 barrel. The L frame barrel was used to add weight. It was the owners idea of an ideal .357. He did not say if the original barrel cracked. An L frame barrel has to be recut with the smaller diameter thread. If you had a Python barrel you could make a Smolt.
In reality the cracked 19 would probably be deliberately fouled to hide the crack then sold to an unsuspecting buyer. That happens more often with bulged barrels. This makes buying the only gun in the store with a dirty bore and low price risky.

I examine a gun very carefully to avoid things like this. Check the timing, look down the bore with my thumbnail reflection at least if not a IPhone flashlight, check the throat of the force cone, etc.
