My pinned 48-4 is at gunsmith for barrel change. Updated with pictures
My very first picture post on this site was a picture of my 48-4. I had just recently purchased it and it shot very well at the range. I was so embarassed because the reply following mine was a statement about the front sight and how amatuer like it looked. Somebody had cut the 6 inch barrel down to 4 inches and a dovetail was put into top of barrel with sight in the dovetail. It worked great but looked awful. Lucky for me I found a N.O.S. 4 inch MRF barrel on Ebay with a baughman front sight. It should look great once its installed. This is a before picture and I will post the after picture when I get it back in 3 or 4 weeks. I thought about doing the job myself but after reading in the shop manual about possible frame cracking just from untorque to break it free and decided that the proper tools (frame wrench, cutters) are really needed for this job. My gun has the smooth semi target trigger with stop and a .375 hammer so it should look great all done. I have recently also put some new Altmont target grips on her also.

I'm sure it was a fine shooter but with the opportunity to return it to original condition it will now look as good as it shoots.

Model 48-4, 4" Barrel.
I'm looking forward to seeing the gun with factory barrel installed. Thanks for posting.

...you were right...probably shot great but...
I had one just like it that even had the extra .22 LR cylinder. Shot great with both. Sold it a couple of months ago when doing a major .22 handgun "downsizing".
Only reason I didn't keep it is that I also had a 60s vintage Model 18 that had a .22 Magnum cylinder fitted to it. Both guns were in 95% condition but the 48 having the 60s vintage bluing just stood out...
And congratulations on finding the proper barrel for such a nice gun...

I finally got the 48-4 back with the nos 4 inch barrel installed! He is the only master gunsmith in my town. It looks great with a nice tight b/c gap. I am going to range now to test it out.

Now that's a very nice looking barrel. Whoever "butchered" the original barrel should have had his gunsmith license pulled.

Thanks fellas! I agree whoever chopped barrel back then and just dovetailed a sight onto front should be kept away from all guns. It shoots perfectly now too! Funny part is I didnt have to adjust rear sight at all. Shoots right in center andto poa . I forgot to add the best part of the whole deal. Eventhough it took a long time the total charge to change barrel was $64.20 - not bad!

In its former condition, that would have bothered me every time I looked at it. You did the right thing, your revolver is beautiful!

Thanks for reaffirming that I did the correct thing by changing barrel. The strange part of this gun is that it has a .400 smooth trigger with optional trigger stop and the .375 semi target hammer. The standard catalog only lists the .400 trigger as serrated as an option. They do list .312 smooth combat trigger as coming on 4 inch barrels. So somebody did the cheap quick cut down job on the barrel yet must of went through the trouble of installing a .400 smooth trigger. Just odd but I do like the feel and this gun also has had a slick job done because single action feels under 2 pounds with no push off. With all the work put into it I can not understand the barrel not being done correctly in the first place? Anybody else have a smooth target trigger on a 48-4?

NICE!!!
Yes, the 48 I sold had a Combat Wide smooth trigger but I am sure someone put it in after it left the factory because whoever did the job also put in a Post War hammer...
Now go enjoy your gun...
And I just remembered I chronoed a bunch of Magnum ammo last week. One of the guns used was the 18 with 48 cylinder:
