Default Model 58

A local old school gun shop has a good looking Model 58 for sale for $650. There is no box or tool but three boxes of ammo. Fair price?

It's tough to find them any cheaper. If you have the urge and the cash, go for it.

IMO it's more than fair. I paid $750 for mine, similar condition and not one round of ammo or nothing (ok it did come with an extra set of grips - elk stag).

Default If there is nothing wrong with it.

And there does not appear to be. I would jump on it in a heart beat. And I have a nice clean one already. They are somewhat rare and they most assuredly do have a bit of a following. Great shooters in general and you can always get your money back out of it if you decide that it is not something that you want to hang on to.

I’d be at the door waiting for them to open to make the purchase. Those original PC, modified magnas are hard to find and very expensive when you do. Good luck, you won’t be disappointed.

That is a 'Buy it right dang NOW' kind of price if it checks out mechanically and the other sides looks as good.

Good luck!

It's a very good price for you especially with ammo included. I didn't particularly like the looks of the side plate screws but other than that looks to have been carried a lot and shot little.

Wrong, wrong, wrong! That price is outrageous! Please PM me the stores's number and I will set the seller straight for you.

Great price. Be aware those stocks are unique to the 58 (and 520) and most 58s are seen missing the original correct stocks. Don't swap those away.

Like some other S&Ws, when the 58s (and 57s) were in production, they were far from popular. I don't know about the stainless guns but would guess they weren't big sellers either.

I recall putting a friend's 57 with accessories on my gun show table thirty or so years ago. I don't know if anyone even looked at it over the course of a weekend.

I haven't checked to see how many .41s were made, but sounds like these would be good guns to hang onto nowadays.

Grips: $150. Ammo: $125-$150. Makes the gun about $350 to $380. When are you going to find another Model 58 for less than $400?

It was better than expected, great revolver. The finish is 95%+ and grips are in great condition. It is a great companion for my 657.

$100 less than mine 5 years ago. Yes, a very good opportunity.

3 boxes of ammo at $45-$50 per box, and I've seen two sets of the grips on a well known auction site for $150 in the last month.

Hard to tell from a distance, but assuming the action and timing are good, that the barrel and rifling are good, and that there are no issues that would require an immediate trip back to S&W to rectify, the price seems eminently reasonable. I vote yes.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but what is it that makes these stocks unique to the Model 58? Anyone have a picture that shows these stocks next to a 'regular' pair?

Don’t have a picture of standard N frame magnas, but the Model 58 and Model 520 have PC magna grips that are round at the bottom. Sure someone with more knowledge than me will have the appropriate photo.

The PC Magna grips with diamonds go for even more. I have an "S"-series 58 that actually came with diamond target grips. But I bought some diamond PC Magnas just in case somebody wants to get picky.

OK - Now I see the difference. I took off one of the grips from my old 'S' prefix Model 58 and took a picture of it next to another grip. The 58 is on the left.

They are not making any more so if that is what you want, and it is in good shape, go for it. One of the few gun show purchases I ever made was one of those about ten years back, maybe a bit more. I had been sort-of looking for one for some time. Got one with decent but not great wood grips in good operating condition and with good appearance for about $500 if I recall correctly, maybe $550. I considered it a very reasonable price at the time. Shoots fine.

I don't think you can beat the price. I have been looking for a Model 58 for several months. prices are $800 plus.

I just bought A 58, stamped SAPD. Minor holster wear. It came with a letter from Smith & Wesson stating when it was shipped and that it was shipped to the San Antonio Police Dept. Also a letter from the SanAntonio Police Dept. stating when it was placed in service and when it was removed from service and the the Company they sold it to in Kansas City, Mo. also came with two boxes of ammo.

Wow this is weird. I recently acquired a model 58 that’s stamped SAPD as well.

It’s got holster wear too. I really didn’t know much about it when I bought it, just thought it was an interesting oddball to add to my collection.

I need to find a photo hosting site and I’ll start posting pics.

It's good to ask folks who know...I paid $1000 for one with the original box, tools, instructions, 4 boxes of Remington LFN ammo, and no holster wear BUT it had target grips, target hammer, and target trigger - the label did not indicate those came with the gun, so someone added them.

It's a great shooter, but I paid too much by not being more careful.

I am not much of a 41 mag fan and prefer adjustable sight guns. But, I would buy that 58 at that price. They have a strong following and with good reason. You can own it, shoot it and if you ever tired of it get your money + from it.

Shortly before I retired I had to turn in my Glock 22 to have some work done on it. A bad round messed it up. They had just issued the last Glock we had to a new hire and the armorer told me to wear what I wanted until the Glock came back. I got my old SAPD marked 58 out of the safe. I replaced the rubbers with a stag grip and a Tyler T. I got a lot of comments on it. A lot of folks have never heard of a .41 magnum.
