The original finishes from the factory were nickle and blue. As far as I have heard, there were no 'Satin Nickle' finishes.
See these two fine examples:

They came from the factory in blue or nickel only. Anything else would be aftermarket

Factory nickel finishes are usually well polished, so I would suspect this one is tarnished/worn or redone, perhaps in hard chrome or another surface finish. Photos would help here.

I ACTUALLY NEVER HAVE HEARD OF ANYTHING LIKE THAT.. ITS NOT A LOOK THAT WOULD APPEAL TO ME, IN THE LEAST. IF THAT'S THE FACTORY FINISH, TO ALTER IT WOULD DIMINISH ITS VALUE, IN THE EYE OF A "COLLECTOR"......
BEING A SHOOTER, I NEVER WORRIED ABOUT SUCH ISSUES. I NEVER PURCHASED NIB OR LNIB FIREARMS--KNOWING IN ADVANCE, THAT I WILL SHOOT, AND PROPERLY MAINTAIN, ANYTHING THAT I OWN. THEY WOULD END UP WITH A TURN RING, AND OTHER SIGNS OF USE.....
THAT ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, WOULD PERIODICALLY INCLUDE, A WIPE DOWN WITH SOME MOTHERS' MAG WHEEL POLISH, AND AN OLD T-SHIRT, OF ANY STAINLESS STEEL GUNS THAT I OWN......

WELL, A COUPLE OF DEFINITIVE POSTS, HAVE ANSWERED THE QUESTION. IF THE FINISH OF YOU GUN IS HURTNG YOUR EYES, YOU COULD HAVE IT RESTORED, TO WHATEVER IT ORIGINALLY WAS. LOOK UNDER THE GRIPS FOR AN "N" STAMPED ON THE FRAME, THAT WOULD INDICATE THAT IT WAS A NICKEL GUN.......

Joe, please unlock the caps...
On the 58, a couple possibilities. Original nickel that is now dull and needs polishing. Could be refinished in hard chrome or the such (please, God, not that). Or could actually be devoid of any finish and is bare metal. Are the hammer and trigger plated? Sure sign of refinish.

There is a Seller on GunBroker who has a "very rare" "S" prefix "satin nickel" 58 for sale for $2K...what he has is a ruined collectors piece that looks like it has been hard chromed....worth about $850...
I wrote and asked him for some documentation on the finish but have not heard back from him. It has the box but there is no picture of the label...

The model 58 factory nickel!
Yep sure as shootin. That was the one that they only made three of. Two of which were sold to Secret agent 007. The other one however made it out the back door to be sold on the civilian market. But they kept it secret. So secret in fact, that nobody knows about it.
I would take out a second mortgage if I could get my hands on that puppy.

Joe in fact has one eye and has to use caps to see what he is typing.
I had my M58 customized a bit, and included a hard chrome finish. It was my first duty gun and would be the last gun with which I would part. It's very functional, which is the reason for the firearm in my world.

I once had a 442 in satin nickle that was supposed to be a factory finish.

So far, the nickel plated S&W revolvers that I have seen had a pretty nice polish to them. One with a satin finish would make me think it is either a neglected nickel finish or an aftermarket, electorless nickel or hard chrome finish. If it is not an original finish, then what you have is a shooter, not a collector piece. But... perhaps a law enforcement agency ordered some with a satin finish.

I have one nickel plated Model 58 and it is as shiny as the old-time car bumpers. Whatever you're looking at is NOT a factory finish.

Yes, the early 442 (no dash, pre-J Magnum frame) did come in a satin nickel finish. It too looks similar to a quality hard chrome finish.

...only problem being that in the 1960s and 70s when this gun was available that finish was not available as a factory option.
The one on GB is still for sale. The Seller did write me back saying he would see if he could if he could verify that it was a factory finish... It is a VERY nice shooter grade gun...would make a great field piece as the finish I'm sure is hard chrome and is a very tough finish. My daily carry Commander is HC and stil looks like new after 11 years of daily carry...

I have some older Smith and Wesson revolvers that the nickel finish has turned to satin... but they are 90 to 100 years old. It is possible for the factory finish to fade to satin, but not common, given that I have other 90 year old nickel plated revolvers that still shine like new dime.

Robert...you can tell this gun was never a bright polished nickel like yours was... This also has the look of hard chrome and doesn't look "old"...
