Default Older Model 36

At an estate sale I found and bought what appears to be an older Model 36. It's stamped M 36 with no dash and shows serial number 141508 on both the bottom of the grip and inside the right grip panel. When the hammer is cocked back there is no visible hammer block, Could this model have been made before hammer blocks? Any and all info greatly appreciated.

Probably made in c. 1959.

I'm not sure what you mean here. The hammer block safety is internal and the hammer is rebounding, like all DA hand ejectors prior to the advent of the floating firing pin on centerfires.

Like Jack, I’m not sure what you expect to see. Here is a photo of #148908 from April 1959, so about your gun’s vintage. Getting the right lighting in there is a bit tricky, but this is what it looks like. The hammer noticably re-sets back from the chamber after dropping when you release the trigger.

Yes.

billsfa: That is what is meant by a "rebounding hammer."

What did you expect: some more obvious hammer block, like on Ruger DA guns?

I can see why that might puzzle you.

S&W began using those internal safeties about Nov., 1945.

I thought the hammer block would come up and visibly block the firing pin hole
